Jailed Proud Boys leader complains that American jails are terrible and he is right

That would require a prison system that focused on reform for anyone at all in the first place. That’s just not profitable, dontchaknow?

But the US already has that, it’s just that the Proud Boys aren’t important enough to get to go to Club Fed.

Pretty much. Shitty jails are the problem, no matter who is in them…

I have no desire to see prisons become comfy retreats from the stresses of “bad life choices” but far too many of them resemble the mess you’d expect in some third world dictatorship’s dumping ground.

I want people to fear going to prison but not because of the real threat of rape and violence and even death.

Treatment should not involve luxury in any definition but should not be cruel and inhumane either.

Punishment and reform both need to be there and those sentenced need to be given real chances to improve and to have the means to keep doing so when released.

We should focus on restorative justice, not punishment. As long as we focus on punishment and revenge, we’ll continue to have these problems. The goal should be lowering recidivism and helping people come to terms with their crimes and to come out people who won’t commit those same crimes again. And of course the VAST majority of people in prisons are not there for violent offenses.
