Jimmy Kimmel got a colonoscopy on camera

That’s nice.
At most hospitals, lay-in recovery is 2-3 hours, and many people have memory issues afterwards.
I’m glad you have had a good experience with sedatives. It doesn’t make my comments nonsense.

I got a camera down my throat in my mid 20s… and while I am glad for having drugs I still find it odd I really have no concept of passing out just oh needle going in my arm, and wait how did I get in this room? how did I put my shirt back on? I remember walking back to the car with my dad and then being in the house again no feeling of being out of it just oh I have been interacting with the world and I don’t even feel like I missed out on the time.

You’re pretty much awake with this type of anesthesia, just very relaxed.

For your prep; DRINK THE GATORADE!! I know people who didn’t; they stuck to water and juice and were very, very shaky. Gatorade prevents that, and I didn’t find the prep to be to bad because of that.

After the procedure, I felt very nauseous (they blow air up there and it eventually makes its way northward and causes discomfort). My hairdresser, who has a family history of colon cancer, and has regular colonoscopies, recommends walking for a half an hour or so and allow yourself to fart freely.

I second this, strongly!. My first one I just went with water because you have to make sure you have the right color/flavor of Gatorade, and stop at a certain time. It seemed a hassle. I was shaky the morning of the test. The nurse said that is common if you just drink water. The second one, 8 years later, I did do the Gatorade, and broth and felt a LOT better the morning of the test.

Thanks for pointing that out OWYAC I forgot about that.

I’ve been through it twice. The first time, the prep was brutal. The second time, someone told me to make the prep liquid very, very cold, which makes it somehow easier to swallow. Holding your nose when you drink it also helps, as does drinking it over the sink, in case the above fails, and you lose it. Finally, the way to get around the awful taste of the prep liquid is to immediately suck a sliced lemon after downing the prep liquid. It completely blocks the nasty flavor and overwhelms your tastebuds. The protocol has you avoid drinking red or orange liquids as they interfere with the scan, but you’re free to drink green or yellow. Lemon ice pops helps the medicine go down.

I had to have both this year - separate times of course.

The twilight sleep was pretty easy to wake up from - about an hour and they said I was fine for my friend to drive me home.

Of the two - the upper endoscopy caused more post procedure discomfort. A few days to go away. Even with them nipping off a polyp with the colonoscopy.

Everyone who’s had one seems more than happy to talk about it. Especially if they opted for the unsedated but only slightly uncomfortable experience. It’s fun watching the train ‘do the circle line’ on the monitor. I thought it was such a shame that I was processed by a bunch of nice people I’d never be able to socialise with though.

I had my wisdom teeth removed when I was 18 under twilight sedation; I ate some hydrocodone beforehand, and they jacked me up with some IV valium, and coupled with some nitrous oxide I was high as a kite. I was having a good old time, even though I felt wrenching stabby sensations in my jawbone from time to time.

Not sure if being high while getting that apparatus jammed up my butthole would be enjoyable, but I’m sure it takes the edge off.

Wait- he only had to drink TWO of those? Is that because his insurance is better than mine, or…? What do I have to do to make sure I get that prep regimen next time, and not the one where you spend the entire day-before gradually drinking more than a gallon? Toward the end I thought I would end up arriving for my appointment in an ambulance.

Too pissed off right now to watch the rest of the video.

Switch between sweet and salty drinks, otherwise you get a horrendous headache.

Shouldn’t they just call it the Kimmeloscopy?

When I had mine, I spent four days fasting and drinking gallons of water, but when it came to the prep liquid, I only had to drink two glasses the size of what Jimmy had: one at bedtime, then another at around 3am for my 9am appointment. They’re huge cups and it tasted like bitter cherry puke, but it wasn’t a gallon.

I just had my first colonoscopy two weeks ago. They really downplayed how long the sedation (Fentanyl) was going to be, to the point that I didn’t realize that it would be such an ordeal. After I “woke up”, my wife thought that I was just my normal self. It took her about 20 minutes to realize that I wasn’t really conscious and she’d be baby sitting me for the next 8 hours. It would have been nice to know that, but it’s a minor quibble for extending my health and life.

Good advice; I’ll keep it in mind for the next time. I don’t remember the prep drink itself being particularly vile though.
