My point is that to people like Trump and Stormy Daniels, the latter of which has an anecdotal net worth of ~$2 million, $300k isn’t a lot of money. But to my father-in-law who loves Trump and lives on social security and medicare, $300k is a lot of money. I’m sure the first thing that ran thru his head when he heard this news is, “Sweet, she’s broke, the lousy liar!”
Considering that I just saw Stormy Daniels “tell all autobiography” on the shelves of my local libraries new books section this feels like a wash in terms of free publicity.
What was her slander or libel against Trump anyway?
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner.
Spend a bunch of money on a possibly unsuccessful PR/Marketing campaign in support of the book

Take a run at the President of the United States in civil court, and maybe even get a judgment in your favor.
Am a little surprised Avenatti is still her lawyer.
This may be getting bogged down in details, but $300k for someone with a $2m net worth is a pretty good chunk of money, given that the net worth figure presumably includes all her non-liquid assets. Yeah, she’s going to have some earning potential remaining in this 15 minutes of fame, but you gotta dance on a lot of tables to make back that $300k once the value of the novelty act diminishes.
These are all garbage people who deserve each other. It’s just a shame that we couldn’t trick the bunch of them into a fake courtroom on a ship that could be put out to sea to let them spend the rest of their lives being awful together without bothering the rest of us.
She sued him.
The defamation suit – separate from the original lawsuit about the non-disclosure agreement Daniels signed with former Trump attorney Michael Cohen that’s now at the center of a federal criminal case against Cohen – was brought earlier this year after Trump called an allegation by Daniels that an unknown man threatened her in a parking lot to keep quiet about her alleged affair with Trump a “total con job” in a tweet.
It may or may not be a lot of money to Trump since it’s hard to figure out what he’s actually worth, but losing somewhere in the neighborhood of 1/7 of your net assets would be a HUGE blow for most people.
The average American adult’s net worth is approximately $300,000, but most of that is tied up in things like homes and retirement. Send that average American a bill for $43,000 and I think you’ll find most of them will indeed consider that “a lot of money.”
Agreed, but when it comes down to it, you can only eat so much food and only need so much house to live in, which are the basic needs. It’s akin to why a flat tax is such a bad idea: you take 10% of someone making $100k/yr and they still have $90k left to survive on while taking that same percentage from someone making $10k/yr and their lives change dramatically.
Having $2 Million in net assets doesn’t exactly put you in “can’t think of any practical ways to spend all this money” territory. You could easily drop that much on a mid-range single-family home in my city. I’d be genuinely surprised if she’s got $300K in extra cash just lying around.
Also, consider that most porn stars’ careers top out long before they hit the age when most people retire—she’s got to make that money last as long as she can. This ruling is going to sting.
The median net worth is just under 100K. https://www.marketwatch.com/story/whats-your-net-worth-and-how-do-you-compare-to-others-2018-09-24
That’s just about my total loan debt! Please put in contact with your rich uncle.
For “Anecdotal net worth”, read “she must be rich, she is famous.” This is of course nonsense. None of us have any idea how much money she has. But let’s say you’re right - 300k is 15% of her net worth. Would you care to lose 15% of your net worth? Would you say “eh, not that much?” It is of course .0001% of Trump’s alleged net worth.
Sweet jesus christ, I typed “stormy daniels net worth” into google. Those numbers are normally based on semi-educated guesses, which is why I said “anecdotal” instead of “concrete proof.”
I’m not arguing that $300k isn’t a lot of money; it’s a helluva lot more than I have. All I’m saying is that the fucking simpletons who support Trump will derive great satisfaction from this number because they would most likely go bankrupt from such a judgment. They don’t understand that the players in the Trump/Daniels game don’t operate on the piddly sums of money that the rest of us plebs are used to, just that their guy got vengeance and was awarded what they perceive to be a lot of money based on their station in life.
To illustrate, there was an episode of The Drew Carey Show in which the department store employees got a one-time $600 bonus in exchange for dropping either some complaints or efforts to unionize (I don’t remember exactly). Why $600? Because the store owners determined that, to the store employees making comparatively little, $600 is a lot of money. That’s the idea.
