the good news on that is there are more purple states than ever. there are multiple states that were once solid red and now potentially lean blue because of the combo of the changing demographics as well as Nostradumbass polarizing asshattery.
I’ve seen the argument made that a term could be established for the Supreme Court, after which that justice is moved to another federal court. I thought the Constitution says that all federal judges are appointed for life, but doesn’t specify which court they serve on.
Sure, go there. But in 2015 Scalia died and McConnell refused to fill the seat. That could have been true as early as 2012. So when would she have had to have stepped down? 2010?
Besides if the court was going to become 11 seats before it can easily be 13 now. Or 15. The way this is likely to play out will doom several GOP senators and make our side angry…
When the Democrats own the Senate (under a Republican president), they should simply cease nominating judges. None.
That's it. Because there's no law against it. The only thing that stops this is: voting Senators out of office, impeachment (by the Senate itself), and a Constitutional amendment. Raw power should be used in response to raw power.
It’s going to be a Federalist darling like Justin Walker. Rudy is too flakey. Barr is too old. They want a Bill Barr who can be on the bench for 45 years. Oh wait— Trump is going to cynically nominate a woman: so it’s Amy Coney Barrett.
And when they do destroy us, they will make sure to blame us for them having to destroy us all.
Well, that’s until their propaganda machine revs up, and then the story will become: we destroyed ourselves just to pin it on them. They love the flag so much, they can never resist a false flag conspiracy theory.
Again, its not against the law. It’s not even unconstitutional. The Senate writes up their own rules of conduct. The Majority Leader interprets those rules and goes by his own interpretation. If you brought a lawsuit regarding the Senate’s interpretation of its own rules, the SCOTUS would decide (as it has always done) that this is not a matter for the SCOTUS to decide: by definition, SCOTUS is ruling that the Senate is acting constitutionally. It sucks, but that’s it. If you don’t like what McConnell is doing, our remedies are limited: impeach him or vote him out of office. The Founding Fathers didn’t think of everything.
While we’re doing the math here: The GOP would be VERY happy to trade one or two senate seats if it means that they get to put a 3rd person on the supreme court.
On the Basis of Sex appears to present Ginsburg’s undeniably inspirational story at a level that non-legal audiences will understand and enjoy. Legal commentators, though, have picked up on a glaring problem, one that pops up in the trailer’s final snippet of dialogue. The scene takes place in a courtroom, with Ginsburg standing before the bench. A glowering male judge tells her: “The word ‘woman’ does not appear even once in the U.S. Constitution.” She responds assertively: “Nor does the word ‘freedom,’ your honor.”Mic drop.
When I saw that RGB had died and read what McTurtle had to say about filling her spot, I just decided to get heroically high.
In that mindstate, I realized that when Republicans talk about real America, they really mean it. I mean really. I am not really part of America. I am a socialist. I believe corporations are immoral and we owe huge economic reparations to the entire Black community in this country. I believe that old Margaret Atwood quotation about the difference between the fears of men and women. I played soccer.
So what I believe about freedom is meaningless because I’m the enemy, and McTurtle can change the rules to ensure that America wins because only America matters and people like me are not America.
And just before I got choked out by Morpheus last night, I thought about the fact that I used to think it mattered that there were more of us than there were of them. Liberals receive more of the popular vote, and that matters. Then I thought, but they’ve got more guns, and I realized that if our numbers keep growing and they see Real America being threatened by the growing numbers of enemies to America like me, then they’ll use those guns. And if guns don’t cut it, they’ll look for something more powerful.
And then I had this vision of five missiles launching straight up into space before falling down on the east and west coasts, and all that was left was the empty husk of what America was along. An empty red husk filled with tribal superstition. The first, full-scale, nuclear war was the Second American Civil War, which started and ended in the late summer of 2023 during the second term of the Trump administration.
… But also, Collins really deserves the ignominious forced retirement accorded to all Trumpists.
Sara Gideon will not vote for a Trump appointee regardless of the outcome of the presidential election. Mainers, cast your votes accordingly.
EDIT: Every time Lindsey opens his mouth to lovingly savor Trump spittle, I donate another $100 to Jaime Harrison. KEEP TALKING, YOU PUSILLANIMOUS SYCOPHANT.
Absolutely. She will never be forgiven for confirming Rapist Kavanaugh, and not voting to convict Trump even after she admitted he was guilty.
And there’s speculation this is just a gambit for her to look “moderate” while still the Senate still has enough total votes to push through whatever far-right flunky Trump wants.
