A Katzbalger is a very distinctive kind of early modern sword generally associated with the Landsknecht mercenaries of the 16th and 17th centuries.

It’s a bit of a peculiar word in German, so I didn’t expect it to be associated with anything else.

Nope. I too have a Katzbalger sword, though it’s a stage fighting model. Better balanced than the ones you hang on a wall, but has no edge whatsoever. Leftover from my days in the Baieruther Katzbalgerey, a 16th century mercenary reenactment troupe.
