Kevin McCarthy failed to get House speaker votes. In fact, Hakeem Jeffries received more than he did

The 12th vote is underway. So far four of the 21 earlier Republican holdouts switched votes to McCarthy, so it looks like McCarthy might add to his tally for once. We’ll see if it’s enough, because he also has three Republican votes against so far and Gaetz is likely to vote against as well.

Edit: nope, still not enough.
Final vote tally:
214 McCarthy
211 Jeffries (one Democrat didn’t vote)
7 Republicans for others

Well put!

Won’t be long before he’s entirely up their collective ass.

There might be enough defectors next Round to elect McCarthy. Why?

QNuts will consider being elected in Round 13 to be a curse. That way, if anything bad ever happens to him, they can claim they caused it.

So far in the 13th round one new Republican switched votes for McCarthy but at least 5 voted against, so I think that’s still not enough.

You know what they say, 14th time is the charm!

At this point the Republicans would need to get two more dissenters to switch votes AND have all other Republicans show up to vote. Last couple votes they had two members absent.

Yeah looks like Ken Buck of Colorado missed the last five consecutive votes, apparently he’s too busy trying to get his face on CNN to actually show up on the house floor.

So, it sounds like McCarthy thinks he has the votes for round 14? But that’s not gonna be until tonight at 10… :woman_shrugging: If so, the question the becomes how fucked are we by whatever stupid concessions he made just to weasel his way into power…

this has always been my worry about the gop’s infighting. we see it with left leaning democrats, bending to the right to try to gather conservative votes ( especially in general elections. ) so it makes sense - unfortunately - that more traditional conservatives might themselves lean hard right to compromise

and yeah, his concessions - which seem to set the stage for a speakership fight when it comes time to raise the debt ceiling - are triple plus ungood

Yeah… even if it seems like the freedom caucus is not as under the thumb of trump as they once were, the fact that McCarthy is still willing to cede so much power to them is deeply concerning. Like, the represent a tiny sliver of the American people… why do we keep bending over for this shit heads. It’s enraging…

The Qnuts might fall in line with the 17th vote, though there might be a few nazis who will like the 14th.

Very. Extra very, if that’s a thing.

Once he wins, it’s effectively just Boebert and Gaetz setting the direction behind a picture of McCarthy. Anything he does that they don’t agree to first, they’ll threaten to remove him. A threat they will clearly be willing to use.

PS: Currently watching the Pelosi documentary, and there’s a quote about taking action instead of despair, or something very close to that. Come up when she’s talking to a group a few a times. Every time it does, I think “that’s exactly what @anon61221983 would say”.

There is nothing good in this imo. The house is being controlled by a handful of people who literally hate this country and its people … And I hate this kind of helpless feeling.

I think we can only hope that some of them get swept up in prosecutions around Jan. 6th, and that in 2 years, people are sick of their bullshit and start voting for people to pull us back from the brink…

Isn’t this kind of an empty threat, though? They’ll be able to make a motion to remove him, but they still need a majority vote to make that happen. A majority that they clearly won’t have, setting their faction up to lose over and over again? I feel like I must be missing something, because this whole demand makes no sense to me.

I think what i just gave your comment should be called a “hope-like.”
