Mmm. Perhaps the Washroom of ‘Thrones’.
4th largest city in North America baby!!
We just edged out Chicago!
When I was choosing a primary physician some years ago, I picked from a list of highly rate ones. One name stood out (sounded sort of Indonesian; wasn’t sure). I thought it was a male doctor, but when I phoned my provider to make an appointment, the gal on the other end of the line said, “Uhh… the doctor is female. You know that, right?” She was surprised that I – a male – would want a woman for primary care. I’m not sure if she was simply surprised at my choice (intentional or not) or if she took it as totally normal (and preferred for whatever reason) that patient/primary care physicians should be of the same sex.
I’m just not sure what you thought it added to the discussion.
According to this, The GTA would rank as the 18th largest state, after Indiana. I had no idea!
I don’t believe we should appease racism, but I also don’t think anyone should be made to deal with a medical professional they’re uncomfortable with.
I dunno, she looked kind of wizened and scrawny and definitely tasteless.
(Continuing the Hannibal Lector theme here)
This is what happens when people go into cryo-statis for one hundred years and wake up without re-integration counseling. Very undercovered problem in the fake news media. Just wait until she finds out about the cars and the internet, she gonna really flip out.
Why shouldn’t it depend on the nature of your discomfort? Why should anyone humour such an absurdly antisocial attitude. No one is forcing her to do anything. If she’s serious she can go somewhere else.
Our optician is Nigerian. He’s a one man business, not a chain, he knows his stuff. His surname looks Irish. He speaks Received (i.e. BBC) English.
He has had people make appointments and then walk out when they met him without a word. He wants to open a practice in a large city where he doesn’t think this would happen, which is annoying.
But there’s only one cure for this. In the village my parents used to live in was a pharmacy cum general shop, which closed down. It was taken over, expanded and improved, by Mr. Patel. Before long the old ladies were saying that they could never go there where that black man was in charge.
A year later, when they had got used to it, the same people were telling anyone who would listen how important it was that that nice Mr. Patel stayed because what would they do without him? Not long after a Turkish fast food place opened up…same thing happened.
Ignorance can only be defeated by individuals who engage with the community, which to my mind means small local businesses. Once people realise that Mr. Patel is a very good pharmacist, they are primed to believe that Mr. Egyptian Surname is likely to be a very good surgeon.
I’d like to look at the positive side here.
One, her behaviour is seen as so unusual, it merits international news coverage.
Two, when I was young, it would have been difficult NOT to have a white, male doctor. Opportunity is now so widespread that at least in this clinic, they may not be any such doctor.
I get the point here, and agree to a point. I don’t think it’s the responsibility of people who are regularly subjected to racism (or whatever ism) to educate the rest of us. At what point does the rest of the world get to stop bending over backwards in order to be treated with basic human decency by white people?
It shouldn’t be but I remind you of Gorbachev’s response to the factory workers who complained that there was now no management “If not you then who?”
Rosa Parks shouldn’t have been necessary, nor should Gandhi, but they were.
Of course, the important thing to remember when witnessing an act of blatant racism is to exercise empathic imagination in an effort to understand the hypothetical perspective of the white person.
Guys, guys. Well done for being totally fucking outraged by this behaviour. You get your badge.
Thing is, we all got that badge here OK? Good.
I’m making this here point: I feel the responsibility for this kind of behaviour lies in no small part with the system that has created people who cannot make any sense of their life anymore.
And yes, not all broken, ignorant people are racist bigots…but a whole lotta racist bigots are broken and ignorant.
