It’s quite simple. They are making an inquiry — or “inquisition”, if you will — into certain books which contain heretical unacceptable content. And when those books are found guilty, there will be a public act of violence which proves faith in the Proper Way of things, which one might be minded to call an Auto-da-fé.

i heard this on the radio but no context. what were the defense and the judge so upset about? ( other than criminally prosecuting a “nice young white man” i mean )

Apparently the prosecutor questioned him in an area the judge had declared out of bounds. Considering the obvious prejudice of the judge (“cannot refer to the dead as victims” for instance) that could be anything, pretty much.
