One should read the whole thing, but here’s the conclusion:

those grow in scattered areas in the forests near olympia, washington. i saw some when i went out to washington in 2018 to visit a close friend. the locals there call them “strawberries and cream” mushrooms as a kind of sarcastic joke. i was told that while they are edible and nontoxic they are not particularly tasty.

Yeah, part of the story points out that “he was one of just 13 lawmakers to vote against a bill that would have ended an exemption for spouses from the state’s sexual battery law.”
And he further states, “To me, it gets to what does the sanctity of marriage mean?” Samsel was quoted as saying, according to the Kansas Reflector. “And I’m single, so I’m not the best person to speak to this. But when you do get married, what does that mean? And what implied consent are you giving?”
All sorts of alarm bells are going off for me.

Agreed, the whole story is very unsettling. I’m glad parents are speaking up.
And to be clear (not directed at you, just general clarification) when I mentioned his single male status, I meant in the context of him not having a child in the system, so his motivation to take the low-paying work is even more suspect.
But more to the larger point, how in heck do guys like this get elected?!? Even with gerrymandering, this is really the best option you can produce. Makes me cry for our country.

When it comes to actual voting I assume they just look for the R after the name. As for the party selecting them, I’m guessing that sometimes they just go “Hey does anyone want to run for this office?” and basically only one person goes “I guess I’ll do it”. There can’t be any thoughtful process that goes into it.
So, the most prominent Republican in the recall effort in California now finally has announced a political position on something. It’s about as bad as you’d expect:
An even the way she phrased it, “I oppose biological boys who are trans competing in girls’ sports in school” just seems so out of step with where society is at right now. What happened to the idea that “trans girls are girls, full stop.”? It’s almost as if, against all odds, this woman doesn’t know any trans people at all.

In a perverse way this is a brilliant strategy. How does a transgender candidate win over an inherently bigoted voter base? By offering them cover for their bigotry, of course.

OMFG. Among the things they’re most worried about is that the early childhood education will:
turn them into social justice activists.
Because who wants to raise a child that turns out to care about social justice?!? What a disgrace.
Came back to add: like others, I hoped after T lost I’d feel less anxious about these things. But like other others already predicted, that guy just made the opening of the flood gates public and epic, and it seems we are a ways off from the luxury of being less anxious (or involved, or active).
How is one failed mogul SO effing exhausting?
