You can’t negotiate with terrorists. Not saying I have the answer to this entirely unecessary crisis, but giving concessions to McCarthy and Greene has only made the Biden White House look weak and emboldened the extremists. They’re going to kill the hostages either way, whether through amputations or default.

We’ve learned that the former baseline of decency, common sense, and love of country no longer exists for nearly half of the country. They really are likely to petulantly refuse to budge, with absolutely no concern for what that will do to our standing in the world going forward. They think they’re winning if they’re the ones to light the match.

I agree with everything except the numbers. I think it’s only about 1/8 of the country that’s trying to burn it down. Another 1/8 of the country ritualistically identifies with the “team” that has been hijacked by the first 1/8. Half of the country is apathetic or confused. Another 1/8 identifies with the other team, right or wrong. And 1/8 sees all of the peril clearly and is actively trying to right the ship and avoid catastrophe.

yup. it’s always been the reason for republicans running up huge debts when they’re in office. they use those debts to try to force an end to, or the privatization of, government programs
the far right will be happy with either default or democratic concessions because destroying government is their goal
