I mean that in lieu of shipping them out in a political stunt.
In the 70s, my parent’s Lutheran Church made a point of helping families displaced by the Vietnam war. Each Church in the area adopted one family, got them a house, registered the kids for school, found work for the parents, got donated furniture, a used car, etc. Within a year or so, the family was paying their own mortgage, the kids were doing well in school, and the father had a decent paying mechanic job. The Church adopted a second family.
Community solutions to problems is gone from our society now unfortunately. This country’s economy would improve with more immigrants. Every restaurant, retail store, and construction company is hiring. We need more immigrants, not less. Destantis’s actions are little more than a political stunt, but seriously fuck with people’s lives. As a so-called Christian nation (and Destantis considers himself a Christian warrior) should do better.
I think we’re just talking past each other, but essentially agree.
It was confusing, bc dfaris posted, “he spent this much on this stunt,” to which I responded, “imagine how much that same amount of money could do if invested in those people instead of a punitive stunt,” then you said, “it would be even less if they got churches to help.”
Yes, it could’ve been way more cost effective to help those people than $10k a month, but it wouldn’t change the amount he spent on his performative stunt. My point was that DeSantis was willing to spend that on his stunt, but not to actually help them.
I’d say Dennis Prager thinks he’s the Voice of God, but that would be less than accurate. He’s so arrogant and narcissistic, he thinks he is God and the rest of us should take his words as gospel truth, and that we should be incredibly grateful for it. IMHO, he’s one of the worst, most detestable personalities in media today, and I wouldn’t trust that sanctimonious pile of rancid, festering dinosaur dung to tell me the time of day or the color of the sky.
The fact he measures worth by utility shows how little he cares for other human beings. If he can’t see value in the existence of other living beings human or otherwise then he can’t find value at all beyond what others can give to him. In my experience as a former conservative, it seems this is a common fault among them as often it seems the ideology requires you to demand value from others but refuse to give it freely in kind. Mutual aid, reciprocity, and empathy are the bane of conservatism as they break down hierarchies and the inflated sense of self worth that often comes with such selfish ideologies.
With all apologies to rancid, festering dinosaur dung. It was at least good for fertilizer. I would recommend shooting his remains into the sun. It’s the only way to be sure.
That’s a fair point. I consider Prager far too toxic to be useful for anything productive (beyond serving as an example of how thoroughly morally-corrupted a person can become.)
