“The FBI said Albert acknowledged listing the address of a Florida university in the post. He noted that the Discord server where he posted was filled with “extreme controversial ideology and potentially other illegal content," according to the complaint.“
The FBI investigation also found that “Albert previously made statements including “Kill all joggers,” an alleged coded reference to Black people, “Tear gas a synagogue." He also allegedly posted a slur for gay people, writing “a genocide … NEEDS to happen not even a question.”
I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if some of that alleged illegal content involved minors.
In March 2022, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) signed into law the Parental Rights in Education Act, which critics dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. DeSantis angrily accused the media of promoting a “false narrative,” insisting the bill does not prohibit mentioning LGBTQ people in Florida schools.
But despite these protestations, Florida schools are using the law to justify the erasure of LGBTQ people. Public records obtained by Popular Information through the Florida Freedom to Read Project reveal that several Florida schools have already removed books with LGBTQ characters from their libraries, citing the Parental Rights in Education Act. Further, training materials produced by the Florida Department of Education for librarians reveal that the DeSantis administration is encouraging this expansive interpretation of the law.
probably this is more for the follow up thread. but it turns out the power generation attacks were not just vandalism after all. who could have guessed there might be a motive other than boredom? /s
“sabotage” is the word npr finally settled on. would that everyone had started there
At least one Florida university has been asked to report its “expenditure of state resources” on programs and courses related to critical race theory and to diversity, equity, and inclusion, at the behest of Ron DeSantis, Florida’s Republican governor, according to an email obtained by The Chronicle . The move is likely to heighten fears among advocates of academic freedom in the state who worry that DeSantis is bent on curtailing professors’ speech in the classroom.
On December 29, Karen S. Cousins, the associate vice president of strategy and implementation in the provost’s office at the University of North Florida, emailed UNF deans with the subject line: “URGENT / New requirement from the Governor.” That same day, Cousins wrote, Moez Limayem, UNF’s president, had received an email from Ray Rodrigues, chancellor of the State University System of Florida. Rodrigues’s email included a memo from DeSantis’s executive office along with an “activity survey form.”
…
Cousins requested that the deans communicate with their associate deans and department chairs to identify the courses within their colleges that “contain DEI and/or CRT components.” She instructed them to include the course name and number, the number of credit hours, and the instructor of record and that person’s rank, along with other information. (She noted that the instructor’s name would not be included on the survey form.)
In Missouri, a new state law that took effect on 1 January makes it a crime for any person to sleep on state property. For unhoused people, sleeping in public parks or under city highways could mean up to $750 in fines or 15 days in prison for multiple offenses.
Fine them money they don’t have, or throw them in prison. Yeah, that’ll work…
Criminalizing homelessness and poverty has a long and gory history in the US of A. And there are some who are quite proud of that and would bring it back. Some of them are in a position to do so.
Crap.
I hope the respondents demand very specific definitions to respond to. Because we all know those terms don’t mean the same thing to everyone any more. Making them spell out the definitions might help in future litigation.
Even just using the generic term “diversity” is problematic. Biodiversity? Ethnic diversity? Diversity of literary styles?
If they refuse to provide definitions I’d want to flood them with info…
