I would like to point out just how close DS9 got to what this period would be like in that episode Past Tense… Almost all the other sci-fi series set in the 2020s managed to be far too incorrect on so much of the technology and on the social landscape (to a lesser degree), but from the sanctuary districts, economic uncertainty, to how the state cut off the internet when “Bell” (Sisko) is broadcasting their demands, even the tech-dude-bros and their relationship to the economy/state, etc, were kind of spot-on!
Reminds me once again, just how great a series DS9 was and still is!

fuck ron desantis. these people suffer long, perilous crossings of the florda strait. they are fleeing corrupt, failed states because they fear for their lives. to send them back immediately is inhumane. many of these people will be imprisoned or killed upon return to Cuba or Haiti.

it’s just that desantis is a fascist. his political games are tirsome at best, dangerous otherwise. that he is sending the National Guard to come down to the Keys to bust some heads of black and brown people, simply wanting a chance at a better life is just part of his performative cruelty. this, to me, smacks of occupation.
I wonder if Florida will fuck this up as spectacularly as Texas has? The troops on the border here are extremely unhappy. Pay issues, bad food (sometimes literally rotted), stuck on tour for a year, etc.
Also pretty useless, having all those troops there and all those billions spent has meant very little in terms of stopping migrants from crossing.
and where to house them? the islands are small and the only bases are Key West Naval and Coast Guard station and the Boca Chica Naval Airstation. no “army bases” at all!

I don’t think you are overreacting at all. This is going to cost a lot of lives, and not just the lives of migrants that desantis and his ilk don’t care about. If Texas is any guide, there will be deaths of troops while on duty and a huge increase in suicides by soldiers. It will cost a lot in misery for everyone except the contractors making money and the pols. It will cost a lot of money Florida could be using to do something useful.

appointing six new board members, including conservative activist Christopher Rufo, a dean at conservative Hillsdale College and a senior fellow at The Claremont Institute, a right-wing think tank.
But it looks like they are hurting brown people, so even if it doesn’t work, it works. As long as they are trying to hurt the people they have convinced their people to be terrified of, it all works.
Maybe people don’t want to hang out with a bunch of fascists anyway? Or maybe this is a genius move that will vastly increase the velocity of the stack!
