One thing I remember from my psychopharmacology class is the the ED50 and LD50 are so close that the FDA would never approve it if it wasnโt already out there.

Well, nicotine is a pretty potent vasoconstrictor, and can cause coronary artery spasm, which is not really good. Elevated blood pressure increases risk for stroke. Addictive as hell. Yeah, pretty bad.

I see. That makes it more evident how bad nicotine addiction can be at least for older folks. And many of these early starters likely still will be addicted later in life. And come to think of it, they may well turn to other, more harmful forms of nicotine delivery at some point.

Nicotine poses several health hazards. There is an increased risk of cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal disorders. There is decreased immune response and it also poses ill impacts on the reproductive health. It affects the cell proliferation, oxidative stress, apoptosis, DNA mutation by various mechanisms which leads to cancer. It also affects the tumor proliferation and metastasis and causes resistance to chemo and radio therapeutic agents.

It is so bad that we have an entire category of insecticides called neonicotinoids which are essentially nicotine with some stabilizing and efficiency modifications installed. They are so effective at killing that many places have banned them for agricultural use, and they are believed to be one of the (many) causes of the great bee die off. The nicotine from a single pack of cigarettes is enough to kill most people if taken all at once, even heavy smokers. It is, in fact, that bad. Oh, and it is also addictive!
