The US Department of Labor has reported an increase of 88% in child labor violations between 2019 to 2023 and several state labor departments have reported surges in violations as well.
Despite these increases, Democratic elected officials have faced resistance from Republicans in the House to hold a hearing on child labor to render solutions and strengthen protections.

A video played at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Wednesday evening included a clip of a white University of Mississippi student making monkey gestures at a Black woman on campus earlier this year.
The video, meant to praise anti-“woke” college students, used a clip from early May in which pro-Palestinian demonstrators — protesting the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza — and counterprotesters confronted each other.
As the white fraternity member approaches the Black woman and begins making the racist gestures, the announcer can be heard saying that these students are “giving us some hope there that not all college students have gone woke.”
