It was Trans and Intersex Pride in Dublin today
Good turnout, probably about the same as last year rather than the explosive growth between the pre-and post-lockdown ones. And lovely weather compared to Pride a couple of weeks ago.
Got there before me! 'Sâokay. Iâm not Ang Lee with you.
OK, so this is a bit of tooting our own horn and all, but I thought this worth mentioning here:
UVA Health Honored for Supporting LGBTQ+ Patients, Visitors, Team Members
UVA Health University Medical Center has been honored with the LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader award from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation for its equitable treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer patients, visitors and team members.
One of UVA Healthâs goals is âcultivating healthy communities and belonging for all,â CEO Wendy Horton said. (University Communications photo)
UVA Health University Medical Center earned the best possible rating of 100 in the foundationâs 2024 Healthcare Equality Index.
âOne of the overarching goals of our 10-year strategic plan is cultivating healthy communities and belonging for all, and this honor from the Human Rights Campaign highlights our ongoing commitment to building that sense of belonging,â said Wendy Horton, chief executive officer of UVA Health University Medical Center. âWe want everyone in the communities we serve, as well as all of our team members, to feel supported and included.â
The Human Rights Campaign, a national civil rights organization for the LGBTQ+ community, evaluates hospitals on how their policies and practices support inclusion of LGBTQ+ patients, visitors and employees. Hospitals are rated in four categories:
- Policies and staff training in LGBTQ±inclusive, patient-centered care
- LGBTQ+ patient services and support
- Employee benefits and policies
- Patient and community engagement
âOur team continues to make progress in making the health system a welcoming place for everyone, whether they are providing care, receiving care or visiting a loved one,â said Dr. Tracy M. Downs, UVA Healthâs chief diversity and community engagement officer. âWe will continue to seek ways to ensure everyone feels that sense of welcome and belonging at UVA Health.â
Itâs nice to see that there are some efforts to do it right, anyway.
More than 2.5 million LGBTQ adults are parenting children under the age of 18
Our new study finds that 18% of LGBTQ people, roughly 2.57 million adults, are parenting minor children in their households. The study also finds that about 14% of same-sex couples (167,000 couples)âincluding almost one in five married same-sex couples (18% or 119,000 couples)âare parenting children under 18 in their homes.
An estimated 5 million children are being raised by an LGBTQ parent, including 2 million who live in an LGBTQ single-parent household and nearly 300,000 who are being raised by parents in same-sex couples. Nearly one-third of LGBQ parents are not legally recognized or are unsure about their legal status as the parent/ guardian of at least one child at home.
Thatâs an interesting factoid⊠that most LGBQT+ parents are in the south! I wonder why that is? Is it greater population density? More people of a âtraditionalistâ bent? More people who started out in the closet, ended up married with children, and then left their marriage? Cost of living?
Good advice for anyone online.

The aquarium provided Magic with a chance to see Sphenâs body, saying it wanted to give him an opportunity to mourn and also improve the likelihood that he would be able to move on.
When Magic saw Sphenâs body and realized his partner was lost to him, âhe immediately started singing. And this was reciprocated by several others in the colony,â Renee Howell, the aquariumââ penguin keeper, said in an interview with Australiaâs ABC.
âWeâre not entirely sure exactly what was being said in these moments of singing, but it was definitely a beautiful moment to witness,â she added.
Sphen died just short of 12 years old; the average lifespan for a gentoo penguin is roughly 12 to 13 years.
