Always!
Always!
My stars and garters, hatemongers and nutjobs use the swastika these days?! You do not say.
There’s nothing unlikely about it’s resurgence as the mainstream GOP adopts anti-immigrant policy and stokes hatred for power.
Someone call for a fainting couch from all this surprised.
Seems appropriate, since most conservatives (even many modern Democrats) loathe libraries. I live in a fairly progressive town, and our library (one of the top 10 in the country) is regularly attacked for letting homeless shelter there in the daytime.
Let’s not forget albinos
It would be great if we lived in a world where people’s motivations were simple. It would make sense that someone who draws swastikas would be doing so because of Buddhism or Nazism, but there have been several incidents lately that defy that logic. With that in mind, I am only suggesting that it would be wise to learn more about the actual motive and identification of the perpetrator before labeling it an incident of “domestic terrorism”. What if it turns out to be a 10 year old?
Somebody scribbled in a book and…
…that’s it? That’s a wave of hate crimes against books and book-lovers? Am I reading this wrong?
So, tell me, if heavens forefend, people start getting beaten up by actual blackshirts on city streets, how do you plan to describe this state of affairs? Is it going to be “Actual biblical apocalypse with bowls of wrath and all that” or, in a cunning twist, “Mild book defacement, with idiocy?” Because the Trumpenreich is going to get much, much worse, having after all not even started yet, and you are running out of rhetorical range on the top already.
People who report like this need to read “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” and meditate on it a bit. I suspect it will prove illuminating.
So passive aggressive hateful and racist acts are basically no big deal if they don’t involve physical violence?
Also keep in mind the defaced books were about Islam making this a targeted act of aggression.
The Quran: Is It a ‘Good Book’?
So, the library encouraged this vandalism? According to Betteridge’s law of headlines, they would expect a negative response: "Any headline that ends in a question mark can be answered by the word No."
But assuming the library wasn’t driving trollies, its approach seems mealy-mouthed at best: “Hey guys, they’re a religion, you’re religious, can’t we all get along?” Huh? That’s the best you can do? The way to dispel islamophobic sectarianism is to appeal to people’s Christianity?
I think they were doing it wrong, in more ways than one.
Here’s an article from Library Journal that looks at incidents in academic libraries. Over 60 have been reported to Southern Poverty Law Center:
If we’re following logic then we can rule out Nazism because the Nazis were favorable to Islam. Therefore, logically, this is the action of a neo-Buddhist terrorist!
Except neo-Nazis do not seem to understand the actual tenets of National Socialism as it was practiced in the 1930s. Like Walter Sobchak said, “at least it’s an ethos”. But the skinhead types use the imagery without any attempt to understand what the movement they espouse actually means.
My whole point was that we cannot just follow logic in cases like this any more.
I thought we were supposed to have changed over to the symbol labelled R in this diagram:
Though I hate it and I don’t understand the change. It doesn’t really have the same flavor.
Of course the SS didn’t create that.
as we could with the purer national socialists from the 1930s?
Hatred is as logical to hard right anti-immigrants as it was to the originals, Max.
But of course, now it’s different right?
See, when I read ‘domestic terrorism’ and ‘wave of hate crimes’ I picture libraries burning and people dead. I mean those are pretty damn scary terms, after all, and ones that demand a severe response in order to protect citizens.
Are passive aggressive hateful and racist acts bad? Yes. But they are infinitely preferable to actually aggressive hateful and racist acts, and they demand a different response. If you call those a wave of hate crime and domestic terrorism what the hell do you call the much worse things that may actually happen?
Thank you. We must humiliate all Nazis
Xeni made a mistake and cited to an older NYT article that only discussed hate crimes generally. The specific article about the libraries is here:
I’m a bit disappointed that you’re the first commenter (and one of the only) to notice this. It seems like everyone was in such a rush to comment that they didn’t even bother to read the linked article and notice. I thought that only Trumplings did that.
