To make matters even more confusing, this word is almost entirely unrelated to “tosser.”
ISTR watching a local 15 second “news break” piece:
The camera opened on the newsreader putting on makeup
Off Camera Voice:“You’re on.”
Maureen Bunyan: “No I’m not.”
OCV: “You’re ON.”
MB:“I’d BETTER not be.”
What I don’t get with all these botched tosses is that there is actually a director in the control room that has all the video feeds on the wall and can see the guy isn’t ready to go on. There also would be a producer talking with him to get him ready to go on air. It’s these guys jobs to make the show run smoothly, if they saw something wasn’t ready, they would toss back to the host, or just go to commercial. If they really weren’t paying attention, it would be just as unprofessional as cutting to an out of focus camera or a video clip that was still in countdown or color bars.
Next step, a weatherman does his report while running a snow-making machine off the top of some random lucky viewer’s house.
