Ummm…wouldn’t it be faster and more comfortable (not to mention better for your lungs) to simply walk in to the restaurant and order there?
My question is why do they all leave so much space between them and the car in front of them when they are stopped? The line could collapse by 50% if everyone moved up - eliminating congestion.
This is something I remember from driving school way back in the 80s. You don’t tailgate even when you’re in a line because it lessens the chance you hit the car in front of you if you’re rear-ended.
Some municipalities will ticket you for following too close, even if you weren’t the original car to start the chain reaction.
Not buying it.
Nothing beats the smell of a V-7 idling in a drive though.
You don’t buy the theory that tailgating the car in front of you would increase the odds of hitting them if you were rear-ended? What part of that theory is hard to believe?
For that matter, what’s the advantage of having the cars bunched up closer together? The other lanes in the road were mostly free of cars so the people waiting in line weren’t creating traffic backup for anyone else.
Seemed to me many were leaving enough space for the entrances to other businesses. Mighty polite of them. Too many people from my locale are oblivious to this politeness.
Less bumper bumps, too.
D’uh. The shorter the line, the faster I get my hamberder.
Wait…what!!! There’s a Whataburger in KC now?! Fuck. And I’m all the way in New Jersey. I really need to move back there.
I think there are 3 now, and more being made.
Patrick Mahomes loved Whattaburger when he was in Texas, and being the closest thing to royalty KC has (well, other than the Royals), they franchised out to here. And I think Mahomes himself invested in several of them.
It was pretty crazy when the Independence one opened up. The lines were long drive through or walk in. It has settled down so that your order will get to you in a timely matter if you order ahead.
Personally, I was impressed with the size of the meal for the price, I usually save some for a snack later for the double burger. I moved from Independence, but hit it on occasion when I am in the areas.
They build one in Overland Park near me, but I am not sure it is open yet.
Leaving space for driveways makes sense. Leaving too much space between a bunch of stopped cars does not. It causes unnecessary congestion.
What the heck are you talking about? There are multiple free lanes of traffic for other drivers to pass the line of waiting cars, they aren’t causing “congestion” by leaving enough space to reduce the odds of someone getting in a fender bender.
Do you just support tailgating on principle or something?
In some circumstances it might, but as others have pointed out above, that isn’t the case here.
It’s almost like you didn’t really want an answer to your original question, but just posted a gripe in the form of a question.
ETA: As an aside, I get right pissed when I see people leaving all that space around here. Sometimes I can’t get out onto the main road at the top of my street because there’s a light a few feet down and people leave so much space. But I’d forgotten about the accident precaution, so thank you @knoxblox for the first reminder of that. I think it’ll help me get less annoyed when I see it from now on, knowing there is a valid safety benefit (even if those drivers might not know it).
Leaving all that space can and does lead to unnecessary congestion. We’ve all see it. Being close to the person in front of you when you are in a line of dozens of cars is not “tailgating” it is being polite. Do you just support being impolite and causing congestions on principal or something?
In a line of dozens of cars leaving unnecessary space has no safety value. Maybe if there are just a couple/few cars stopped …
As someone that was in a five car pileup because the car behind us pushed us in, BULLSHIT.
You seem to be the only one here who sees “congestion” in the video above, or who believes that leaving a safety buffer between cars is “impolite.”
Your complaint is akin to getting angry at people lining up for an ATM on an otherwise mostly-empty sidewalk because they are leaving space between each person instead of crowding together into a conga line.
Like Mahomes, I grew up in Texas. Whataburger is an institution there. I love it.
I’m starting to get a real whiff of the ocean here. And about a story in landlocked Utah, no less.
They asked why people do that, got a very valid response related to driver safety, and continue to groan. They didn’t care about an answer. Seems like bad faith posting.
We’ve all see it.
The best kind of citation is saying it’s everyone else’s personal experience, you just know somehow. It elevates everyone having reasons you’re wrong into a conspiracy to deny the truth.
