Mad Max mocks machismo

If you were trying to be civil, instead of trying to score points, you wouldn’t even have written that post.

##NO SPEED LIMITS, NO RULES

#JUST DRIVE YO

So, apparently Cory Arcangel [gif, above] is a relative of Allen D’Arcangelo (who I knew vaguely, but enough to go to his funeral)?

That’s a very interesting take. But I feel like even your holistic encapsulation of the problem still leaves us with an aetheric moral critic sitting on our shoulder, tutting from within us at the emergence of our connection to cultural artefacts. Isn’t this obfuscation of our agency? Are we destructively invoking (and I’m guessing you grok the idea I’m going to use here) choronzon in our inner ideation?

I’m not one to shy away from expressing unpopular opinions. So here goes. I saw Fury Road. I get why people like it. But it isn’t feminist.

The movie is bloody tip-top.

I’m just spewing that none of a long list of great Aussie character actors got a part :frowning:

Meh…I read Joe’s original comment, and read through the onslaught of your rageposts…hey, why are you and OtherMichael doing your usual ragetrolling on this guy, eh? All he really did “wrong” was state that he didn’t think it was right to blame half the human race for all the problems in the world, and called a commenter “obnoxious” for saying, and I’m assuming that this is the comment:

Reading the comments here it becomes sadly clear to me how many people know nothing about history, law, and current events, especially the males.

And yet, it doesn’t stop them from running their mouths. YEAH BUT WHAT ABOUT THATCHER??? And they think they’ve accomplished something.

Listen boys. I don’t care how many times you’ve been “friend zoned” and you’re upset because you think you’re entitled to attention from women. You’re not. You don’t lack rights. You’re a loser, and you deserve it.

Now tell your fellow males in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Iran, Egypt, the Congo, and Russia to stop destroying the world. Denmark and Finland are the way they are for a reason. Just because you watched a video on World Star Hip Hop of a girl hitting another girl means nothing. Got that, idiots? Now back to Call of Duty.

One of many in that thread.

Oh…that sounds like you, down to telling the boys to go back to their video games (because of course, only gross dudebros play video games.)

Erm…this is awkward…anyway. Is that you? Is that why you’re absolutely frothing at the mouth with rage?

I’m like them; I’m not sure why this movie has generated so much discussion on various issues. It sounds like it’s going to be a great popcorn flick. I’m sure I’ll see it after it’s out of theaters; most the people I hear saying good things about it are dudebros, which makes me think it’s just going to be wall-to-wall action. I wouldn’t have shit on the conversation if it weren’t for seeing one person absolutely fucking dominating the conversation with the usual claims of intellectual superiority, with very little in the way of backing that up. Reminds me of this dude I roomed with in college; I still think it’s a wonder he didn’t murder me in my sleep, not because of my behavior, but because of his mental instability. But that’s a story for another time.

What Joe did was to position an argument in an offensive way, then demand that discourse should be civil.

I am not discounting his opinion. But the, “I can punch you but you shouldn’t punch me” rhetoric is tiring.

My guess is that you see only what is happening without energy spent on why it’s happening. Unless by “not wanting” you mean you are sitting with your eyes closed. Which would possibly be somewhat silly.

I’ll just have to wait and see. Hopefully I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

I apologise if it came across as me being annoyed that people are discussing the film and wanted a stop to it.
What I was hoping with my original comment was to bring about the idea that some are seeing the film as a “feminist battlecry” or whatever the term was, because they wanted to see it as such. Which would be raising the film on a pedestal to be flung excrement at by first the one side and then eventually the other when it fails to live up to the vision. Which it can never do. Discuss, but try to build on what is actually there.

PS. And both teams tend for the “angry”, but one side has a uniform so I referred to them with that.

“For the everlasting glory…”

Oh, yeah, I’m totes ragin’.

He said he was hated for being a man. He’s not. He’s not being hated. If he is being picked on here, it is not because he is a man, it is because he uses stupid arguments like that. I am being generous in calling his arguments stupid, because I suspect the quality of the arguments are not to blame, but the maker.

That anybody can step into this discussion and say “hey, I understand there are thousands of years of systemic gender power imbalance, and our culture glorifies rape, and these are problems, but I think the most important issue is that you are angry about all this and hate me” well… it’s not about him.

Except that it is. Somebody who sees themselves at the rightful center is part of the problem, not the civil discourse.

In hindsight, maybe I should’ve gone with my first instinct and said “it’s good if there’s a positive message in the film, but please take a step back, talk about the film and try not to drag it into the usual shit-flinging competition that seems to be the going norm.”
