Well it’s a good thing, then, that the Speaker of the House doesn’t play a significant role in certifying election results. That job falls to the Senate, and the President of the Senate, who is currently Kamala Harris. Also, the Electoral Count Reform Act, passed in 2022, affirms that the Vice President’s role in certifying election results is purely ceremonial. Mike Johnson can die mad if he doesn’t like the results of the election this year, but he can’t block it.

Despite his having no say in the matter, it’s still depressing to see someone who has such contempt for the Constitution and the Establishment Clause as Speaker of the House.

A T***p loss would be blasphemy, and you can’t expect an appointed servant of God like MAGA Mike XXL to certify blasphemy, now can you?

There was a period where he seemed to be pushing back against the far-right of the party and asserting himself, acting a bit more like McConnell.

He fell into the “McCarthy Trap”, prioritizing the loudest elements of the party (in the safest seats) over the representatives in competitive districts that actually need to win in November to keep their jobs.

and, he knows exactly who he has to cozy up to to keep his own.

Make sure to vote so much in the swing states, they can’t claim anything other than free and fair…

Didn’t they threaten to oust him already?

So if, in his opinion, it was not free and fair and fraud free, he’s going to violate the constitution.

Correct, officially two wrongs make a right

When will Dominion and Smartmatic start suing these B-Tier conspiracy assholes?

Put THE FEAR into all of them for spreading baseless lies.

There’s no mechanism for him to do so. So if he doesn’t like the results, everyone is free to ignore him. Failing to ignore him is where a constitution violation would come into play.

Honestly I was a bit surprised that the GOP leadership didn’t end up going forward with that government shutdown. (Not that avoiding such a politically stupid stunt weeks before election day shows any indication that the man is at all reasonable. Just that he’s not a complete fool.)

What a world we live in when the comparison “he’s not a complete fascist nutjob–he’s more like the ‘regular evil’ of Moscow Mitch” is a meaningful description and an accurate reflection of our nightmare political landscape.

Nothing he does should be taken at face value. All of it is just an act and messaging for the next 10 minutes of coverage.

So far, it’s playing out exactly how Jeff Jackson said it would.

It’s all theater and nothing to do with actually governing. Also, hugely wasteful for the government agencies that have to prepare for shutting down.

That’s interesting. I didn’t know deities were allowed to vote.
His god is obviously an asshole. After all, according to the mythology, it made Maga Mike in its own image

Not his decision to make, of course, but gotta make sure the MAGAts are all on the same page, re: election fuckery, by chanting the Mantra.

They don’t actually want elections that are ‘free, fair, and safe’. Exactly the opposite.
They intend to be rulers, not representatives.

He is no stooge. He is a willing co-plotter in the ongoing Coup.

FTFY.

Even given a best-case scenario (a Democratic landside across the board), it’s going to take decades to undo the fuckery that has been done by these assholes. Their threat to Democracy will exist as long as they are in positions of power and their funding sources remain intact.

RICO the bastards!

But he also promoted perhaps the most farfetched conspiracy theory bouncing around at the time: that two voting technology companies, Smartmatic and Dominion Voting Systems, flipped millions of votes from Trump to Biden as part of an international plot.

Would Johnson care to repeat those allegations outside of Congress? It’s possible Dominion and Smartmatic’s lawyers have finished counting their winnings from previous cases and are looking for new paydays.

MAGA has been installing dozens of loyalists at the state level for the past 4 years. If Harris wins the popular vote in GA, PA, AZ, NV, MI or any state really, those loyalists may claim there was fraud and refuse to certify their electors and electoral votes. Per Article XII of the Constitution, if neither candidate reaches 270 electoral votes, “and if no person have such majority, then from the persons having the highest numbers not exceeding three on the list of those voted for as President, the House of Representatives shall choose immediately, by ballot, the President”
