Man exercising right to open carry robbed at gun point

Yeah, you’re right, cops are too trigger happy, and race is a factor in some of the cases.

So if they don’t like people with guns, they should call 911 and get a few carloads more? How does this possibly present itself as any sort of cogent solution?

Embody also had the benefit that the police knew him because he does his one man show all over TN.

He is alluding to the fact that some yahoo (Ritchie) called 911 with a made-up account of what this guy (Crawford) was doing in Walmart and the fact that perhaps the cops should have paused to think for a second about why there weren’t dozens of calls about a guy waving and pointing a gun at shoppers before they went in blazing. He is not saying that more people should have called 911.

Walmart Shooting: Lone 911 Caller Admits Lie, Crawford Never Pointed ‘Gun’ — And That’s Not All

Ritchie continued to maintain that Crawford was “waving (the gun) around.” But an attorney for Crawford’s family who has seen Walmart surveillance video of the incident and the minutes leading up to the shooting says the video shows nothing of the kind. Michael Wright said that the video shows Crawford walking while on the phone, with the BB gun pointed at the floor, except for one moment in which he casually swung the toy gun up to his shoulder. Ritchie said that he was also shown the video by prosecutors, which Wright called “very improper.” Witness stories must be based solely on their personal recollections of an incident, the lawyer said. Wright said that in the video, no other customers appeared to pay much notice to Crawford and the BB gun. But Ritchie said he felt threatened by Crawford, as did his wife, leading to the 911 call. Ritchie was the only person to call 911 from the Walmart.

Here’s an interesting case:

Meet Hell's Saints, an open carry group in Michigan. They're earnest, friendly, and come across as gently zealous - just like the Jehovah's Witnesses who sometimes knock on our doors - only they're heavily armed and not nearly as well-dressed.
Guess which one got arrested for weapons charges during one of this groups open carry walks? Mixed-Race Open Carry Group Strolls Through Detroit. Guess Who Gets Arrested? | Crooks and Liars
If you guessed this guy, congratulations!
I understand that. My point is that anybody calling 911 is only going to fill a place with more gun-waving people.

This happens all of the time! People complain about somebody being there with a gun, so they get… somebody else sent there with a gun. These people never seem to notice or complain that the police who respond to their open carry calls arrive openly carrying firearms themselves.

I doubt he was an anti-gunner nut. I think he’s a racist asshole who tried to “SWAT” someone and get them in trouble.

Yea, you’re driving trollies.

Yea, you are going to have to try harder than that.

Elijah Woody was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon* under his sweater, he does not seem to be wearing a sweater in your picture. How do you account for that?

Plus, he was not the only black person in the group.

Nice try, though… I nominate you for a gold star for all the googling you did!!!

* another blow for open carry.

Furthermore, I would like for you all to meet a hero of mine. Black Man With a Gun.

Black people and White people, united in support of the 2nd Amendment instead of being divided and disarmed… I FUCKING love it!

Will he risk his neck for his brother man?

That’s a risk I wouldn’t take.

Sometimes that’s right. But the expression “When all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail” comes to mind. Most of us, if we were sensible, would decide we were generally better off without that particular extra option.

Why are you commenting on a site that you have such a low opinion of? Long time reader of comments by crazy idiots, first time commenter in a thread full of crazy idiots?

I’m actually really glad to find out through this thread that there are many open carry groups that welcome and stick up for black Americans. I think I allowed the comments of some open carry group on the death of Michael Brown to make me unfairly associate open carry with racism, I shouldn’t think of open carry as overrepresentative of racism. Of course there are racists in the Open Carry movement - there are racists building homes for habitat for humanity and volunteering at the food bank. I should have known better.

That is the only picture that Hell’s Saints has posted…

The cops say that his sweater was over the gun, but was that after they took him down?

Never said that he was the only black feller in the group (you sure have an interesting ability to read stuff that isn’t there) – “said” that he was the only one arrested and he happens to be black.

:star: muchas!!!
Though, I guess that I didn’t really earn it – no googling – the Woody story was a sidebar on a story about John Crawford.

Edit: decided to earn my star – tried searching for a better story… Turns out that Woody wasn’t with his group when he was arrested – he was solo with some friends.

He does wear the gun high on his hip, so a jacket could easily get pulled over it if he was forced to the ground/etc.

Except that you have a full toolbox - verbal deescalation, running away… - and the gun, including warning shots, is just an addition when the these fail. But if you cannot avoid fight, and are cornered, you want that additional power tool. You always have the possibility to not use it when you have it, but when you need it and don’t have it, tough luck.

I’m not but your post is reasonable and I like the cut of your jib.

I’d love to know what movie it came from and whether the prop maker knew but was told by like a director or someone that it wouldn’t be phallic enough if it wasn’t designed in such an inoperable way. I’m just all around super intrigued.

From Dusk till Dawn.

I bet @Donald_Petersen has seen all the straight to video sequels…there’s a TV series now too.

Let me fix that for ya:

"He does wear the gun high on his hip, so a jacket( or sweater ) could easily get pulled over it. "

Hence, the charge.

I think he would… can you dig it?

I’m oddly ashamed to admit that I’ve only seen Texas Blood Money. Still haven’t seen Hangman’s Daughter nor the series (god only knows why, that shit was made for me).

Man, daneel, maybe you know me too well. FDTD was my MOTY, right down to the dusty old Cougar, the soundtrack (which I bought on CD and cassette), and the albino boa which somehow never quite made it into the Badass Wasteland.

And Salma Hayek when she was game for anything.

It was groovy enough for Robert Rodriguez to use at least twice. I think the most recent use was on Sofia Vergara in Machete Kills, which is far better than it has any right to be:
