My fear is that better (as in ‘not terrible’) candidates will (and almost instantly) morph into terrible elected officials. I have no disagreement with your point, but Santos is definitely a lesson to learn from, and why honest, in-depth vetting is so important. That would only work, of course, if genuinely “better” candidates are not poisoned and corrupted once in office.
