The absolutely worst thing for an authoritarian regime is to have a successful, free and democratic political unit next door. They would have to set about destroying the neighboring states immediately. It could not possibly be peaceful.
It would be a special military operation.
Of course because there are no real red or blue states it will be neighbor against neighbor, so I imagine something like loudspeakers and battered, repurposed Insignia 720p LCD TVs erected along a fortified West Elm St. blaring “We have always been at war with East Elm St.”
