There’s an excellent video essay about this from Hbomberguy:

A pox on the American Family Association. And on Walmart too. A nasty, itchy one, with boils.

Isn’t this how we win elections these days?

Such an easy calculation for Walmart.

They piss off some conservatives, but no way in hell do they stop shopping there. The idea that conservative america would boycott Walmart is about as laughable as them boycotting the NFL.

In turn, Walmart attracts some easily persuaded left leaning folk who are gullible enough to think Walmart actually gives half a shit about LGBTQ people.

Win, win.

Until Lowes and Tractor Supply starts selling the same breadth of goods that Walmart does, conservative America really doesn’t have much of an alternative.

But of course, if that point is ever reached, clearly the only solution will be to make campaigns increasingly extreme in order to ensure that the relevant segment is suitably outraged. Fun times ahead!

I was on my way to post the same video. Hail Sobek.

I look forward to Walmart ad spots featuring hardcore gay sex.

Yeah, I was initially surprised that Walmart would be a party to this, but it’s true - the people who are actually going to be upset (besides being a tiny number of people), are a captive market. There’s no downside to them doing this. Where else are they going to buy things, Amazon? I’ve been to these towns. Rural/small town conservatives aren’t going to stop shopping there because there’s literally nowhere else to shop.

I was about to make that same joke, but given the mainstreaming of porn, it’s probably not a joke, ultimately. I mean, it might be softcore, instead, but…

See? This is why I love America; we truly do know how to make a buck off of anything, anywhere, anytime.

I live in one of those towns. My particular area has some choices for groceries, but for all the other stuff you can get at Walmart? No way in hell.

I was going to say softcore, but hardcore is a funnier notion.

“… let the company know how customers feel about Walmart’s shift away from neutrality on this controversial issue…”

Like these AFA fuckers were EVER okay with neutral!

If things were neutral, why was that statement preceded by this:

“It’s clear that Walmart is on the path of elevating homosexual relationships to the same level as the male-female model of marriage.”

Guess what, asshole?! The “same level” would be fucking neutral. What you are bemoaning isn’t a loss of neutrality. What you’re pissed at losing is their quiet complicity in your hate-mongering.

Although the fact these aren’t “real” commercials being aired on national television should assure you that they aren’t really on the side of the LGBTQ community. So don’t worry, they aren’t going to be calling out the “beliefs of its customer base” any time soon.

I’m waiting for the same tactic in reverse. Suppose, for example, the CEO of Starbucks announces a plan to split the Democratic vote…

…oh shit.

…conservatives have become… tools

Yep, that.

I still dont understand the benefit to walmart. I get that the triggered conservative snowflakes that already shop at walmart will continue to shop there, but are non walmart shopping libs really going to start shopping there because of obvious pandering?

Sure, why not? Not everybody is as marketing-savvy as the posters in this thread. And there’s little to no downside to Walmart if it doesn’t work.
