Mexico's former president is 'not going to pay' for Donald Trump's 'fucking wall'

Tell it to Paul Robeson

Considering the US accounts for over 70% of Mexico’s exports while Mexico is only 13% of US exports, I have a feeling the US would “win” the trade war. Especially when you look at what we export vs. what they export. They export finished products, we export components. They export crude oil, we export refined petroleum.

In any kind of protracted trade war, especially with someone who seems fully willing to ignore short-term pain like Trump does, it seems inevitable that the US will “win.”

Not that I say that Trump’s plan is sane or anything, but the idea that we couldn’t do it isn’t that far fetched.

You’re thinking within the bounds of a sane leader - a sufficiently insane president could strongarm a non-nuclear power with threats of nuclear strikes, particularly when you consider the power structure that decides who to nuke and when

Dude, with the stuff you’ve said, if you said the fuck-word. it would be barely a blip. Compared to shit like saying that the Japanese-American internments weren’t a bad idea (just off the top of my head as an example), no, that would not cause an uproar.

It would still hurt. Especially in agriculture.

And if the US were to launch a trade war based on an utterly delusional campaign promise - not on a legitimate grievance - it’s would affect trade with other countries too. The US’s increasing refusal to honor NAFTA on wheat, lumber, trucking, livestock and manufacturing has led Canada to sign free trade agreements with other countries as fast as it can. A free trade agreement with the EU is waiting for ratification.

Specifically, the US bans exporting its own oil. So it imports Mexican and Canadian oil, refines it, and exports it. You can stop that, but it’ll hurt.

And even without banning Canadian oil, it would give Canada the final push to develop the Energy-East pipeline, to take Alberta oil to east-coast refineries and ports.

Trump might be willing to ignore the short-term pain (and long-term consequences), but Congress isn’t. It wouldn’t be long before Republicans refuse to deal with him like they’ve refused with Obama. Try to launch a trade war based on his delusional claim, and Congress would override him.

More money needed for patrol boats in the Gulf of Mexico as well as the cost of the wall.

From personal experience, I would say exit visas occur in countries which are hard to leave easily, such as islands or countries with militaristic security.
