Also interesting that more than one of them attempted the hypocrisy route of argument by bringing up LGBTQ+ youths. They’re of course not saying that child marriage is similar to LGBTQ+ making decisions about they’re body and should be able to make the choice but rather that in both situations young folks should leave their bodies in the hands of older people.

Not surprised Republicans don’t like a law that prevents them from marrying minors. Nor their impulse to make a transphobic comment while talking about an unrelated topic. They really like being as transphobic as they can, as often as they can, huh?

[Angela] Rigas, another representative who voted no on making 18 the legal age to marry, explained why she opposed the package on her website.
“My own parents started my family before my mother turned 18,” she said. “If this law existed back then, our family would never even have a chance to exist. Not every person shares our beliefs. We need to allow for personal choices even if we don’t understand why someone would want to make them.”
Well, thankfully this bill does not also contain a provision for the construction of a time machine, so you’re good.

The same could be said for the descendants of Sally Hemings, but I don’t think that’s a very good argument for re-legalizing chattel slavery and child rape.

The other thing that I hate about the argument she makes is that no law can prevent two teens who accidentally get pregnant from eventually getting married after they actually become adults.
They are also telling on themselves that they believe that a couple like that couldn’t stay together and still want to get married two or three years after having a kid.
Preventing two actual teens from getting married doesn’t force them to break up. When we are talking about actual teens and not a predator and a victim.
I’m personally the child of a teen mother myself, and my parents shot gun marriage ended when I was 9 months old. No one’s life was improved by that brief awful marriage. My parents would have both been much worse off if they had stayed together and I would have been raised in a very unsafe environment.
I’m of course also assuming accidental pregnancy because anyone actually wanting to have a kid that young needs a very long lesson on basic biology and how increasingly dangerous it is to have kids every year younger than your early twenties. Again personally, if my mom hadn’t had a C-section we’d both be dead. I also resent my grandparents for making her look at the ultrasound and pouring on the Catholic guilt. And for not taking my Aunt’s advice and putting my mom on the pill in the first place when she started dating an older boy who was obvious trouble.

Coming from a country that struggles with this, it’s unfathomable that politicians would feel bold enough to actually express support for child marriage (and child labour) so openly in the 21st century!
I mean, we just raised the minimum age to 21 and that was with a pretty conservative government in power…

So one must assume that she voted to support those D-supported measures regarding health care and voting registration??? Right?
