The 1911 in my left hand is actually 9mm. So I guess that makes me a bi-ammosexual?

Awesome. I bought the issue of Zot! that he did (fully) at a comics fair back in the 80s, knowing nothing about it. It became one of my all-time faves (and now my sonā€™s too). Years later I looked into the Zot! collection proper and while it is as good as people say, Iā€™ve always been secretly disappointed it wasnā€™t as wild as that Cynicalman stuff.

If you ever want this style of hat, or any other style really, my go-to costume-wear site is Gentlemanā€™s Emporium. Thereā€™s a lot of tacky, cheap ā€˜steampunkā€™ stuff on their site these days (hey, it sells, I guess) but their specialty is western / Victorian / turn-of-the-century styles of hats, pants, shirts, vests, capes, shoes, even bathing suits. I wore several of their outfits for years of heavy-duty use in a LARP and theyā€™re great quality.

In fairness, Darkman was a discount Shadow knockoff :innocent:

Heey - that is where I got mine! It is made in the USA, even.

I am going to make an advert for the lady who made my cape and scarf so she can use it on her ebay sales.

Who knows the best place for a quality cape?

The Shadow knows!

I said Darkman was more or less a rip off of the Shadow. People who wanted to talk history I was like, in a way the Shadow helped build the foundation for all of this, because he inspired Batman and other heroes. Bill Finger even said the first Batman stories were just re-worked Shadow stories.

You should, itā€™s fantastic! Whatever about Frank Millerā€™sā€¦ uh, controversial opinions, this is rip-roaring stuff, up there with TDKR. And Sienkiewiczā€™s art is as you know beautiful, simply sui generis.

I couldnā€™t find the last two issues I need to complete the setā€¦ Gonna read what I have when I get time.

The closest I could find on eBay is user janissewcrazy Costumes By Design. Is that the shop?

This is the collected/graphic novel version I used to have (and will buy again!)
Even looking at the cover now makes me grin.

Nice!! Iā€™ve always been impressed by their selection and their prices. Really nice folks, too. Theyā€™re the kind of site that will email you and say ā€œhi! We see that youā€™ve bought a few things in the last few months, so weā€™re giving you free overnight shipping to say thanks.ā€ And Iā€™ve done the same hat-forming steam trick with success.

Yes, Costume by Design is the ebay store:

Here is the scarf I got:

Here is the cape, only she made the black out of crepe and made the inside of the collar red.

And finally, in some of the comics he wear an Inverness cloak, and she makes a very nice WOOL one of those. But OMG, it was so hot with what I have, and 3x as expensive (though Wool is pricey, soā€¦) FYI give her 15 business day lead time, but she got mine done in a week. Depends on work load.

Like I said, someone who emailed me back at least once a day. And she did everything I requested to a T. So a gem of a seller.

I always thought the Spectre was another suspiciously Shadow-esque character. Even if it wasnā€™t a conscious rip-off, the Shadow really inspired that sort of masked crimefighter the same way Superman inspired dozens of knock-offs of varying originality.[quote=ā€œMister44, post:94, topic:78102ā€]

This is great. My wife and I have decided itā€™s a crime that bell-bottom jeans have made multiple comebacks in the past few decades and yet capes remain severely underappreciated. So weā€™re going to wear capes to at least the winter ballets/operas/symphonies next season.

Thereā€™s a long running local production of A Christmas Carol in which everyone wears those fantastic Victorian greatcoats that look like theyā€™re made from velvet curtains. I always swear Iā€™m going to find one to brave the New England winters but so far have only found wool.

I have a wool cloak for my ren fair costume. I bought it in high school, because i figured it would cover up my shitty costume and make me look better. But I have gone caroling in it!

I see women get to wear short capes in the fall/winter. Sorta poncho like. They also get to wear cool boots that look like they are from an elven woods or a back water space port.

The ren faire I used to work at ran in midsummer, and then August; the heat was sweltering. A crafty friend of mine made me a half-suit of armor (just the collar, breastplate, and arms) out of roofing aluminum, and while it looked terrific, I was worried Iā€™d bake inside. Turned out that the aluminum reflected the heat, so I was actually cool and comfortable in my knightly armor.

Our ren fair is late Sept int October. So depending on the year the cloak is great. Of course my costume is now full on with pants, shirts, and doublet with sleeves and a wool highlander hat. So the cloak isnā€™t needed most times. High school costume was just thin cotton and muslin. I used to do Tā€™ger Toggs site and swapped out a full outfit.

Itā€™s already been said but DAAAAM! those BLAMĀ“s are sick!
