Bothered, but not in the least surprised. Clinic defenses - where anti-choice people attacked abortion clinics and some of us defended the clinics, patients and staff from getting smashed and beaten - here in Toronto in the 80s were full of children bussed in from local Catholic schools.

Seems to me that saying that they can’t distinguish a native american from a “Mexican” is a little too generous, they are just showing us what we already know, that their problem is with anybody that doesn’t read as “white”.

“Except for the FACT that the major news outlets do not say this. Just your blog mark.”

The Washington Post headline said he was surrounded. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.washingtonpost.com/amphtml/local/social-issues/it-was-getting-ugly-native-american-drummer-on-the-maga-hat-wearing-teens-who-surrounded-him/2019/01/19/41678d84-1c1b-11e9-8813-cb9dec761e73_story.html

The New York Times said he was surrounded:

“They intersected on Friday in an unsettling encounter outside the Lincoln Memorial — a throng of cheering and jeering high school boys, predominantly white and wearing ‘Make America Great Again” gear, surrounding a Native American elder.’”

The BBC said he was surrounded:

“The teens are seen surrounding and mocking Mr Phillips and his companion, as the two men sing the American Indian Movement song.”

The Telegraph said he was surrounded:

“Other students, some wearing Covington clothing and many wearing “Make America Great Again” hats and sweatshirts, surrounded them, chanting, laughing and jeering.”

So, it’s fine for you to call me out on my opinion, but if you want to do it fairly you should say: The New York Times, The Washington Post, The BBC, and The Telegraph, and Mark are all wrong, and I am right."

It’s always good to have context. I appreciate your information because I had seen this video of the incident which gives more of a sense of who all is there. This video shows more of the exchanges between the Native Americans and the high school students, and, later in the video, the exchange between the African Americans (they are a religious group and I can’t identify their group by name…Black Israelites?).

The AA and MAGA wearers have some interesting exchanges and (unexpected) reactions, particularly when the African Americans condemn homosexuals using a slur.

I would value seeing the events that transpired before the Native American intervention–there were lots of cell phones out, so certainly more will be posted. Anyway, thankful the Native American intervened and that everyone appears to have walked away unharmed.

Apparently Father DeVous had some nice things to say about a pedophile priest, though.
I’ve seen some direct defenses of the kids from associated priests that are of the “those poor kids, getting hurt by adults who keep hitting the children’s fists with their faces!” variety. It’s kind of amazing how fucking awful they all are.

No and no, obviously (given previous form).

Yeah, they’re being pretty obvious about it.

This video (link) seems to show taunting was going in both directions between the high schoolers and the African Americans. You can hear the drumming has already started in the background. image

There are tons of videos floating around. I’ve linked a couple previously in this thread and here is a third, that appears to show the sequence beginning well before the African American and the students were interacting.

It shows a group of African Americans that were shown in other videos I linked (possibly the group the mother referred to), standing on one side, and the students, standing/cheering several feet away when the Native American approaches in between these groups with drum beating.

Honestly, from these videos I’ve linked, I don’t think a full picture of events has yet to unfold, and based on comments I’m seeing all over the web and here, I am doubtful that many people care to consider anything other than what fits their pre-conceived narratives about these groups.

No one can be ‘provoked’ into bigoted behavior.

There’s such a thing as free will and making your own conscious choices.

I don’t care what the alleged “Black Muslims” (as the smirking kid’s mom called them) said or did; nothing that happened prior to the videos justifies the actions shown in all the footage of these bullying teens disrespecting and trying to intimidate a Native American elder.

There is no excuse for it.

Just look at that facial expression… It is pure smug contempt… and I hate to say this but the facts are what they are… it is the pure entitlement of a white person over the perceived inferiority of a person of color. It is this mental state that this clip captured. The sense that being white in America means more than being anything else in America. And whoever raised that boy and whoever raised all those other boys in the background should be deeply ashamed of their failure to instill a sense of respect and dignity in how they treat not only others but elders. Elders who are Americans, through and through. It is truly sad that such a display of callousness is happening today. That the “Make America Great” hats truly symbolize the rebirth and return of a mindset of facism - of white power, white supremacy, of bigotry, racism, and a last stand for all that Hitler stood for. The are the dark days of America. Where have you gone country of enlightened democratic values? Come back to the prestige that we need to strive for - a place of strength through unity, a place of acceptance of differences, love of neighbor. Come back home America.

Paging Mr Fairey, Mr Shepard Fairey to a White Supremacist Beatdown Telephone.

It might be interesting to put the three minute ‘face-off’ into a larger context:

Of course. They might even end up on the Supreme Court.

When you were born in Adolf Hitlers home country and half of your history curriculum in high school consisted of learning about the rise of National Socialism, you don’t have to think for a second about where you have seen that kind of look on people’s faces before.

One thing I can say though is that I just watched an interview with Nathan Phillips and damn I have respect for that man. I hope other people listen. When these are your enemies you’re not the “good guy” anymore.
