…
I bet she now regrets her rash decision to wreck her glasses, hindsight being 20/20 and all that
“I can’t bear to look at my loser son!”
Bit of a pessimist, glasses half empty, and all that.
The idea that these people are under so much pressure is sad. Life under Capitalism, eh?
Well, she’s ready for a career in professional wrestling, anyways.
Totally normal behavior.
I’m unable to see wrestling as anything other than a form of porn, so the idea of your mom in the audience getting mad at you for “losing” is kerplaxing my brain
They can help with that these days.
I wonder, was she frustrated that she couldn’t see the match very well through her lousy glasses?
I strongly suspect that getting emotionally invested in combat-adjacent sports and the prestige benefits of kin success therein goes way back. Plus, wrestling is one of the ones that, for whatever reason, has a relatively poor pro tier and limited sponsor/brand interest; so it ranks particularly low(not necessarily curling or frisbee golf low; but absolutely not football or basketball territory) in terms of economic vs. other incentives.
Eventually, our near ubiquitous cameras will cover every ill-considered, embarrassing thing we do at any point in our lives. AI should help select the juiciest. I’d like to think that at that point we’ll all let one another off the hook for this sort of thing … there but for the sake of god, and all that. I’d also like to think that fairies are real, and I’d really like that pony that’s been on my Christmas list since the 60’s, but there you go.
I feel bad for her children. I hope they’re okay.
Everyone’s acting like she’s some monster, but I think it’s FAR more positive to take out your frustration and anguish on your glasses than your child. He’s had nothing but great things to say about her in the past, and what I saw in that video was a mom who herself had been competitive feeling the pain and anguish of her son losing in his last NCAA match. It’s not like there’s a career to go on to after college wrestling is over, as there is with other sports.
So, yeah, over the top. We all have our moments. Most of ours won’t be caught on camera and televised, though.
Must say this reaction of “i’m upset/angry = i must smash things” utterly baffles me.
I’ve seen examples of it many times (including one person at work who replaces his mobile phone about 3-4 times a year because he can’t stop himself smashing it when angry)
I do not get that urge, at all, it’s a totally alien concept to me… That said, i have been described as ‘unusually chill’ as a personality.
I don’t know if it is the same in the US, but traditionally here in Germany there was a class distinction. By and large boxing was for the working class and wrestling for the middle class. That means that not only was there less incentive to make a living from the sport but the whole ecosystem was actively hostile towards the idea. And the pro wrestling that did exist was of course something quite different and strictly separate.
Just the modern version of Mathew 5:29
And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out,
and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for
thee that one of thy members should perish, and
not that thy whole body should be cast into hell
Depends. There’s wwa style entertainment wrestling then there’s fighty wrestling. I’ve started longsword fencing, and last week we got taught a bunch of fighty wrestling moves to use when you’re too close to swing a sword. That was on Wednesday. I still hurt all over
just SO much at stake here.
