We are allowed to indulge in insane contrafactuals; but professionally obligated to hang as much internally consistent and explanatory material as possible off any one we do employ. No Gish galloping or overt handwaving is allowed.
That said, only fungi in specific professional contexts are counted as epistemological fiduciaries, and only they are specifically bound to uphold the Principle of Parsimony and the Principle of Plurality; so you may well see lines of argument that would make Occam nervous in less formal settings.
