And the transportation engineers tend to be a bit, um, special themselves.
As a civil engineer who did all the coursework anyone considering going into transportation engineering had to do at my uni my theory is: overexposure to clothoids at too young an age. Some kids just can’t handle that.

When I’ve seen these mandatory monitoring features in medical devices, it has been as a mitigation for known but rare defects.

Beside the consumer protection aspect of forcing customers to subscribe to an optional service they may not want, this reeks of a potential safety defect that GM wants to monitor without holding back sales.
