There was an amazing NYTimes article around 1985 about the dangers of bagels. (I believe this was where and when I read the claim that 1/4 of Americans had never eaten a bagel.) They had the number of lacerations and amputations due to bagel accident, in NYC and the country as a whole. What was interesting was that New Yorkers, despite their greater contact with bagels, were less prone to injury from them. The explanation being, New Yorkers feared and respected the dangerous bagel. I have not been able to find the article again, alas.
