You must be either much older than me or much younger, since I hadn’t learned of any of these distinctions. Then again, I grew up in NYC where Jews were rarely the explicit target of racists.
I grew up in the Midwest (Cleveland, OH, to be specific), and I’m 31.
This comment section is in need of more levity. But no leavening.
Oh, God, the town the local college kids get to when they think they’re hearing banjo music already. Nope, sorry, kids, you have another four hours to go.
The closest one that the SPLC keeps tabs on is in a tiny little town named Eldorado, about as far south in Illinois as you can get. If you were to ever end up there, you’d wonder how any of these people could think they were some kind of master race. Median household income is about $27,000 and falling, and population about 4,000 and falling. It’s one of those towns that only existed because steam trains needed somewhere to get coal and water. There’s not even a railway anymore. It make the town Slingblade was filmed in look upscale.
Though the SPLC has chapters listed for Chicago and Bloomington.
If that dog’s face didn’t make at least a few of them reconsider their ways then they truly have no souls.
I was going to post that… They had spent the season building it up like she’s only doing it for the kosher meals. When she breaks down with the Rabbi and he finally gets that she’s serious, it just killed me. Black Cindy FOREVER!!!
Richard Spencer went to college. Being smart and intellectual doesn’t mean a person can’t also be an odious human being.
Indeed.
(apologies for being a bit O/T - just posting because it’s current)
Well, they’re Nazis, so one would assume they don’t have souls anyway. In any case, my only interest in the souls of Nazis is to allow their god to collect those alleged souls as soon as possible.
So Comic Sans really IS the worst font in the universe.
I think @AbelardLindsay was making a pun (KKK = K3), which is why I didn’t reply.
But yeah, Kankakee is practically Chicago… but it wouldn’t surprise me if there were KKK there, as well as everywhere else in Illinois.
Smart and intellectual?!? There’s nothing smart or intellectual about “my love 4 u burns like 6,000 [sic] jews”. At best, it’s suburban edgelord shtick, which itself is the laziest and most boring humor that can still be considered humor. At any rate, it’s completely tone deaf, and only the most sheltered of all cul-de-sac kids could think that doing this and attaching a student organization’s name to it would not backfire spectacularly.
There’s smart, there’s book smart, and there’s intelligent. These kids might be book smart enough to survive college academically, and they might be intelligent enough to be able to piece things together from whatever limited input they might have, but they have just proven that they are not smart smart. They simply cannot navigate the outside world in any meaningful way. This is the kind of person that gets into college, and comes out of college unchanged, and a big part of the reason why I don’t work in academia.
No! No, it’s not true! My parents were just very advanced in hygeine, that’s all…!
@jlw - sunlight is the best disinfectant. Well done!
Jason, you’re not a Muslim??!!??? Boy, was I way off.
We don’t have a thread on the French election but this would seem to fit in with the Nazi theme:
I was making a KKK pun, but an accurate one. Place is a damn racist hellhole. Or so I’ve been told by, er, a friend…
I have to disagree. Smart and intellectual is not a value judgement with some inherent sense of morality or progressiveness attached to it.
I was referring specifically to Spencer, who has an advanced degree in European intellectual history, not the offensive Hitler valentine nonsense. Smart people can hold odious views. Smart people can do incredibly shitty things. Being smart and intellectual does not mean one is moral, progressive, or empathetic. In fact, I’ve known quite a few smart, intellectual people who are in academia, as you note, and have done pretty shitty things.
But that is why I am here, because the kids who want to go to college and pursue a life of the mind deserve to have people who will care about them and work for them rather than people who only see them as a means to an end (attracting grad students to pad out their CVs, to get high marks on rate my professor, etc).
Keep in mind, I’m also the kind of person who goes to college. So there’s that. Maybe I’m lousy at navigating the “real” world, too (whatever that is) and that’s the only reason I’m in academia. maybe I’m just as much of a garbage person as Spencer, who knows.
Or they’ll have to leave and to go Israel. So NOT less antisemitic than her father, just smart enough to known how to couch it in terms that doesn’t ring any alarm bells.
No alarm bells for non-Jews who don’t really care that much about antisemitism anyway. That headline made my hair stand up on end.
