New Age shop won't sell magic wands to Harry Potter fans

They’re supposed to be charming ambassadors; it’s their job to be disarming.

Hmm…would it be wrong to make some of those in black satin for burlesque?

There’s a market for pretty much anything one can think of.

Purely in the interests of science, I have replaced the word “wand” with “wang” in the first Harry Potter Book
Let’s see the results…

It’s probably true that a lot of New Age practitioners would do better to confront reality instead of hiding from it. But the standard “lol you don’t even understand physics” attack is often more smug than it deserves to be, too. I mean, you can’t wish for teleportation hard enough to make it happen; but if we’re talking about economics or health or romance-- things that play out inside human minds-- then it’s not at all obvious that magical practices can’t have worthwhile results.

Like, if casting a love spell involves meditating on the object of your affections, and your feelings for them, that could well aid the wooing process; and if believing in the ritual is what made you do that work, then it would be non-insane to say the love spell helped you bag the hottie you were after. I can imagine how “serious” witches might get pissed off at $8.99 Amazon love spells marketed as Wiccan roofies.

If you read the later Potter books, you find out that “wand” is already a synonym for “wang” among wizards (also “cauldron” for uterus, “mixing potions” for procreative sex, etc.). It’s all in the lyrics of a song Mrs. Weasley is nostalgic about, much as everyone else tries to ignore it.

I thought it was in Aksum.

Even that’s in the realm of possibility, techically. From my understanding (now mostly defunct by decree of Lucas that the Expanded Universe never happened, sadly) it was merely a thing of reflexes: Jedi use their force sensitivity to hone their reflexes, but considering how slowly blaster shots move in the Star Wars universe I don’t see why, say, almost any traditional warrior on Earth trained in sword use wouldn’t be able to pull the same trick.

In the RPG game, the Force was used to deflect blaster bolts. Actually in the old West End game, it said only Jedi could use light sabers, but that makes zero sense, as you said, someone who knows how to use a sword should be able to use a light sabre as a sword.

For deflecting bolts, sure, probably some of the time. I double it would be doable all of the time with out the Force. A Solo said, “I call it luck.”

I think the most obvious example involved the Weasley twins in The Order of the Phoenix

‘FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE!’ screamed Mrs Weasley. ‘THERE WAS NO NEED – I’VE HAD ENOUGH OF THIS – JUST BECAUSE YOU’RE ALLOWED TO USE MAGIC NOW, YOU DON’T HAVE TO WHIP YOUR WANDS OUT FOR EVERY TINY LITTLE THING!’

I> still encourage anyone who feels at all compelled to write to do so. I just try to warn people who hope to get published that publication is not all it is cracked up to be. But writing is. Writing has so much to give, so much to teach, so many surprises. That thing you had to force yourself to do—the actual act of writing—turns out to be the best part. It’s like discovering that while you thought you needed the tea ceremony for the caffeine, what you really needed was the tea ceremony. The act of writing turns out to be its own reward.

Hey, the qualities she associates with each wand wood are the ‘traditional’ associations…
