This is something my parents have been trying to figure out lately. They’re both lifelong Republicans who’ve entirely broken with the party now that Trump is the cult leader. So I may need to put this book on the Christmas list for them…

It’s hard times, all the institutions seem to failing simultaneously;
supreme court is corrupt,
winning the popular vote means nothing,
police are not effective or even at times hostile,
churches have become extreme.

Distrust or outright disbelief in democracy is a common aspect of right-wing politics. I noticed over the last several years, I think at least since Romney ran for president, where Republicans and other right-wingers would constantly argue that the US is not a democracy but in fact a republic.
Rather than a semantic argument, it occurred to me that this was a persistent attempt to weaken democratic institutions making democracy the problem, with terms like “tyranny of the majority.”
I see the same thing happening here in Canada as Canadian conservatives move further and further to the right, copying MAGA strategies. As Canada isn’t a republic, they don’t have that particular specious argument to work with but they nevertheless claim Canada proves that democracies don’t work.
If not democracies, then what?

In other news, water is wet.
This should be obvious at this point. People don’t love Trump despite his myriad disqualifying flaws as a politician and human being, they love him because of them.
He’s the orange avatar they can use to take out all their revenge fantasies on those who they feel have “wronged” them simply by existing.

Since at least the 1950s, the right has been deliberately dumping sewage into the language (taking 1984 as a how-to guide?).
Into liberal, they dumped:
- Neo-liberal economics. (As if that’s not political!)
- Classical liberalism, a cherry-picking retcon redefining liberal back to the beginning.
The John Birchers colonized libertarian.
Nonsense garbage like anarcho-capitalist.
The “America is a republic, not a democracy” thought-stopper is more of the same.

The US has always had this system of voting (with loads of restrictions on who could actually vote), now it’s over 200 years old?
The police have never been effective, and depending on your sex, skin color or dress (and many other variables) have always been hostile.
Some churches are extreme, the humanistic, loving ones don’t get nearly as many clicks or headlines though.

The UK is a democracy, but not a republic. It’s not a republic because it has an established church and inherited titles. Add those in and you have a republic. Take them away and you have a democracy.
Republicanism is one of the many concepts republicans don’t understand.
