The Packers having a steaming turd of a season kept anyone from getting too worked up about the playoffs around here.
I have to admit, it is a fairly impressive destruction job. I was expecting a crack and some messed-up colors, but nope, that durable outer casing failed to prevent fall-apart.
To be fair to sports, it happens with anything that provokes intense emotional responses. Big national sporting events just mean those responses sync up.
They’re wearing protective gear because they are required to by law, not because they want to. They are modern-day gladiators, play-fighting till the other one can’t get up. Violence in contact sports is inherent.
Nothing that I can think of.
Admittedly, I’m not a big sports fan.
But is football the one where a racially mixed audience watches primarily African American men give themselves brain injuries which later lead to mental illness and suicide while at the same time destroying their bodies through injuries which will prevent them from being employed much past their late 20s all while recruiting other poor disadvantaged black men to fight in the military?
I yawn at the concept of “virtue signalling”. That said, I do think of my lack of enthusiasm for professional sports as a virtue (I’m biased, obvs), and if someone thinks I’m “signalling” when that lack of enthusiasm comes up in conversation (which is a lot - y’all do like to talk about sports), that’s their problem, not mine.
