The sad thing about Social Security is way back in the 1960s, due to the baby boomer generation, Social Security was going to be insolvent without changes. Politicians stalled for decades on increasing full retirement age until it became a looming crisis.
Another thing is the demise of employer pensions. 401k programs were intended to allow workers to supplement their pensions. Instead, corporations used 401k plans to replace pension plans to save them money. It’s especially heinous when employers don’t have some form of matching contributions; this happened to me in my last contract job which lasted six years — zero match.
