No-one seriously hurt in crash that sliced car in half

My Volvo (RIP) had that construction. In contrast to a race car or boat, the entire passenger space was the protected area. In the crash the article documented, that space was compromised. Once the passenger cocoon has been broken, I’m not sure there is any engineering directed at maintaining integrity of resulting halves.

I will chalk this up to ignorance of car design on my part. I was essentially congratulating the designers of the car for making it crash safe.

Take a close look at the passenger seats in that car before you pronounce it “crash-safe.” (-:

The driver got lucky. And it’s very lucky there were no passengers, front or rear.

Safe? Nope. Not even close.

Fair enough.

Still no serious injuries! Woo-hoo!
