Hard to go where you’re already AT.
“You have arrived at your destination”
Hard to go where you’re already AT.
“You have arrived at your destination”
I’ve thought that as a Canadian even.
…the clenched fists of truth
I thought the jokes around “unclenching” would write themselves, but I’m just sort of numb, and undercaffeinated.
I understand, but I think that it’s aimed at their membership, so they can feel like they aren’t the sexist and racist ones, even though they clearly are. In their minds, being called racist and sexist is the worst thing (political correctness run amok) and the leveling we’ve seen since the 60s represents the erosion of their rights, in their mind. Having a person who can be seen as being some sort of minority (or a woman, or better BOTH) tells their people that they are correct about that mindset. It’s not really about the rest of us, but about their own membership, I think.
I have no idea what this means, but my point was that “the Resistance” already has a - nonviolent - meaning. To treat it as some sort of violent rebellion against the state requires deliberate misrepresentation of it or some delusional thinking. Either way, you don’t counter that misrepresentation with mere facts.
The only way we save our country and our freedom, is to fight this violence of lies with the clenched fist of truth.
I am comforted by the fact that they will not be able to pick up guns while their fists are clenched.
Yeah, I know.
*sighs
This really makes me wish that device in the Doctor Who ep, The Sontaran Strategem, was a real thing: y’know, the one where all the standard firearms were rendered useless because it caused the copper surface of every bullet to expand within the barrel.
It’s the thought that counts!

Bear with me on this one …
I’m currently house sitting my childhood home in semi-rural Ontario, Canada. My 10-year-old son and I were looking for something to do and I said, “hey, let’s go into town and buy a pellet gun so we can do some target practice in the backyard.” Then I got to thinking, “I wonder if it’s even legal to do that here?” Turns out, no, it’s not. Local bylaws won’t even allow you to fire a paintball gun, archery set or slingshot. And then I realized, that’s probably why arrows aren’t raining down on me from the nearby backyards. My son and I laughed, said how glad we were to be living in Canada, and went to play mini golf.
I know it’s off topic, but goddamn Bogart and Bacall were so awesome.
Oooh, yeah. I’ve been searching for a good fantasy world to inhabit, and moving to where you are sounds really good right now. I’m not sure how much longer I can handle living in the real world down here as it disintegrates around me.
Shoot questions, ask for answers later.
As they should be. This is not something you live down.
On the what about what and what?
I searched these comments for the names “Scalise” and “Hodgkinson” and found neither name mentioned out of 100 comments. That seems like a weird omission since the topic is political violence.
We should all be united in condemning political violence or lawlessness no matter who is doing it or what their politics. If we want to hold the orange clown in the white house to standards, we need to lead by example and be the change we want to see or we’re no better than him. We cannot ask someone else to do right if we are not doing right ourselves. Our demands for them to police their side lack moral weight if we are not policing ours.
We have a government of separation of powers and checks and balances and the government belongs to the people. The orange one heads one branch of a 3 branch government. He is not a king and cannot rule by decree. He is constrained to play his role in the dance of governance and even when we rightly say “that’s a bad policy, Drumpf, you idiot” it is wacko to try to undermine the legitimacy of the government just because we don’t like the president. To refer to the US federal government as “an authoritarian regime” is reckless and insulting to all US citizens to whom that government belongs.

The ad says to “fight the violence of lies with the clench fist of truth”. It did not actually mention guns or shooting anyone. It did seem a tad over dramatic.
But if you claim to be part of “the resistance”, you should assume that some people are going to take you literally. I know for most people, “resistance” means wearing Che t-shirts and making angry internet comments. But under normal non-ironic circumstances, resistance fighters commit lots of sabotage, foment insurrection, and kill people. They also actively support hostility by enemy nations.
No matter what normal people think of Trump, most of them are not going to be very keen on anyone taking those kinds of actions in their communities. The anarchists that keep saying “This is War” should not be surprised when people start striking back. One should not declare war unless one is prepared to be on the receiving end of violence.
I think all of this, including the rhetoric from the NRA, is a terrible idea. I have been to some wars, and dealt with insurgencies. We do not want that happening here ever again.
