Someone I knew grew up in Lima, OH. He’s the sort of person who makes you feel like all is well w/the world just by sitting next to you. Warm, friendly, silly, smiling & laughing all the time, funny, sweet, kind.
Then I met his parents.
Sour, dour, never smiled, never laughed. So cold, standoffish, and unpleasant when introduced, it didn’t just border on rudeness, it was 3/4 of the way through rudeness and looking downright nasty square in the eye. I wanted to go wash my hands after shaking theirs and being glowered at for no reason. I couldn’t imagine either of them saying “I love you,” let alone actually meaning it…and how on Earth they raised someone like him is well beyond me.
I guess the uptight AF, cold & unfeeling midwestern puritan thing is alive and well in Lima, OH. More’s the pity - that shit should be stamped out. I’m not demanding that folks who ain’t feelin’ it should wear big fake smiles, but FFS, can’t you warm up a little bit? After all, it’s not winter all the time!
