As they should. This is an illegal campaign contribution using tax dollars.
Plus the whole Establishment Clause thing too.
They called themselves the Church of Latter-Day Saints or the LDS church… Mormon was applied to them by the people who hated them because of the polygamy and collective ownership of their property…
Interesting, I didn’t realize it’s actual church policy (or at least “church encouraged”) for them to refer to themselves as some version of “members of the Church of Latter-Day Saints.” Doesn’t really roll off the tongue, especially for a church that spends so much time on recruiting/proselytizing.
I don’t know if it’s policy, but I’m fairly certain that when they formed and then were pushed west by those hostile to them, the name stuck, and it was applied from without rather than from within. LDS is what members of their church prefer to be known as, not Mormons.
Sorry, I hope my message didn’t sound like I was snarkily questioning your info. I should have included that I actually did a search on it, and if my Googling turned up reliable sources (I’ll be honest that I didn’t vet them stringently), it is official church policy for its members to avoid using the “m” word and use the long form. I was trying to think back if any of the missionaries actually referred to themselves that way when they were out converting heathens in the mean streets of NYC. I can’t remember, probably because you always knew who they were anyway, so a more formal introduction wasn’t necessary.
