One of the Mars rovers (Pathfinder) was controlled by an Intel 80C85 CPU running at 2MHZ, so computing power is not an problem. (I think a Pi Zero is even more powerful than the processsors in Spirit and Oppy.) Reliability of the overall system is more of an issue.
