Rimmer: I can’t let you out.

Lister: Why not?

Rimmer: Because the king of the potato people won’t let me. I begged him. I got down on my knees and wept. He wants to keep you here… keep you here for 10 years.

In a Bergamo hospital deeply strained by the Covid-19 pandemic, exhausted clinicians reflect on how to prepare for the next outbreak.

Summary

In a pandemic, patient-centered care is inadequate and must be replaced by community-centered care. Solutions for Covid-19 are required for the entire population, not only for hospitals. The catastrophe unfolding in wealthy Lombardy could happen anywhere. Clinicians at a hospital at the epicenter call for a long-term plan for the next pandemic.

Nope, you are not, I was. I missed the spacesuit set up. Looking for the kind of mask and shield equipment we use. Now I am jealous.

We just had our first day of fewer new cases than the day before, and third day of fewer new deaths than the day before. This could be hopeful if our testing regime wasn’t so borked that it is hard to retrieve meaningful data from it! I “look forward” to Trump crowing about how great his response has been and taking credit for it. I don’t think I am buying it, at least not yet.

Edit to correct: second day of fewer new deaths. Counted the last increase in. Not sleeping well and kinda foggy.

And if you’re stuck somewhere without access to care - more is not better.

Russia is sending nine planes with decontamination vehicles and various specialists to Italy today.

Personally, I find this quite uplifting. I’m also deriving a small amount of amusement at the strangeness of Soviets and American Evangelical Christians fighting the same fight.

Strange days indeed…

They are not Soviets - Soviet Union fell 28 years ago and current Russia is a very religious, conservative and capitalist country, but I agree that it’s uplifting that Russia is sending help to Italy.

Probably not alone:

“Not required”? That doesn’t seem to make any sense, and I’d like the person about to ram a swab up my nose to be as calm and composed as possible, thanks.

I realise that. But in my heart, they will always be Soviets to me!
