“The most extensive manipulation of public opinion that has ever happened in human history,” said Olavo de Carvalho
I miss the Uptown. Michigan and State theaters in Ann Arbor are similar vintage, but only Michigan plays the John Waters “thanks for not smoking” spot like the Uptown used to (or maybe still do).
The DC Uptown recently closed as well.
Sad.
The Uptown in Minneapolis will be back open as soon as they’re able. The theater is a Twin Cities institution.
Or they do and are suppressing the info as much as they can as long as they can. I am of the opinion this is more likely.
@noahdjango, other ATLliens… here is the latest from the GA department of health…
Fulton county has the highest number of cases right now. and I think Dekalb Co. just declared a state of emergency. Our local NPR state has a good round up on closings, etc, for anyone interested (it includes a list of closings and live streaming stuff):
Astrologer, hmmm? There will be an unfortunate number of people who consider this a reliable source.
He is considered a guru of the new right wing/conservative movement in Brazil. Nowadays he calls himself a philosopher.
Philosophy… the last refuge of scoundrels!
Somehow, this is absolutely not surprising. Completely on point for the new rightwing, anti-intellectual idiots running things.
Hey, @anon61221983, this brings to mind a question that I had. Have we had a situation before where the fascists began coming to power and then the bottom fell out rather than vice-versa? It seems historically the disaster brought the Nazis, now the opposite seems to be happening.

The federal government has launched a measure to try to mitigate the effects of the pandemic on the local economy.
One of the points of this governmental act was the fact that workers could have their employment contracts suspended for 4 months without a salary. Everything that goes against most Western democracies is doing to protect workers and businesses.
This act was promulgated in the dead of night. This afternoon the government decided to remove this part of the law.
Yeah, that’s the case generally, with the depression giving an opening to fascists more generally… I think that if the fascists actually fail to to fix things or they make it worse, by say… starting a world war… they won’t last out their “1000 year reichs” or whatever else.
One thing to remember is that even the most authoritarian, top-down of regimes needs some level of public buy in or support for things to reach some level of normality so that they can stay entrenched. It can take a while, but if things are going badly, there will be a reaction of some kind, including people being run out of office or some other sort of rebellion. If China had not finally ordered the massive lockdown that it did and continued to ignore it, I think that might have been a possible outcome, losing the “mandate of heaven” or whatever the modern Communist equivalent would be called (“mandate of the people” I guess).
I guess that’s the thing, we’ve been seeing the growth of right wing regimes since the end of the Cold War, and this pandemic might bring in some sweeping changes to government approaches on a number of fronts.
Yeah, great…
As an aside, I have to say those who think this will go away when it warms up are not paying attention to what is happening down your way. Unfortunately, I begin to think Summer will not save us.
I’m no expert, but for a lot of people the bottom fell out a long while back. The fascists have been threading an incredibly fine needle with those folks, convincing them not only that the bottom hasn’t fallen out, but that a heterogeneous cabal of liberals, immigrants, and scientists is conspiring to collapse the earth underneath them.
Which would be super bad, because the Earth is hollow and flat.
This had been true since the very beginning of his “administration”, but no journalist gives a shit because Trump = clicks, from conservatives and imbecile liberals alike.
Ferris Beuller quote FTW.
Well, fuck…
