According to the article, Chicago is closing lakefront areas and trails because so many people are drawn to them for exercise that people aren’t able to maintain social distancing.
In contrast, Minneapolis is opening up riverfront areas (by closing the streets to cars) so people who are drawn to them for exercise can spread out in order to maintain social distancing.
In Minnesota we’ve now been issued a stay-at-home order by Governor Walz, to begin tomorrow night (Friday, March 27) at 11:59 pm, through April 10. People will be allowed to go out for groceries and essential services, and for outdoor exercise while maintaining social distancing.
I’m not an expert, of course, but I can say that when the weather gets nice, people really, really want to get out for exercise. And, people will always do stupid things to get around restrictions. It’s still chilly here, but our snow has mostly melted, and there have been a lot of people running, walking, and biking by the river already. It seems to me that it’s a good idea to give folks here more room to spread out so we can keep exercising outdoors.

Pretty much NYE and Christmas rolled into one. It’s a huge event.
The difficulty in Chicago, especially with all the parks closed, is that we don’t have a ton of lakes…we have THE lake. You know how something like 90% of Canadians live within a thin band along the southern border of the country? That’s how we are with the lake. Just crossing Lake Shore Drive to get there is a bottleneck, from a 6’ separation point of view.
This is bone-chilling:

The soldiers will operate a field hospital alongside Federal Emergency Management Agency personnel out of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan, treating non-coronavirus patients to lighten the burden on local hospitals that must free up bed space for people suffering from the new virus, said Gen. James McConville, the Army chief of staff.

Meanwhile, soldiers with a third hospital unit, the 627th Hospital Center from Fort Carson, Colo., began deploying this week to Seattle, and were in the process Thursday of finding a location to place a field hospital, McConville said. Unlike the units heading to New York, the more than 300 soldiers from the 627th will likely build a hospital out of tents.

HS (Helsingin Sanomat) visited a food bank in Helsinki’s Kontula suburb on Wednesday, where many of those in line belonged to risk groups, but didn’t keep a safe distance from one another. The food bank serves 150-200 customers daily.
“When your own life is full of problems, such as money and health, it’s difficult to become too concerned about this kind of big news story,” Anne Hietalahti of the Deaconess Foundation told HS.
