Ongoing coronavirus happenings

More FCC:

“When the Trump FCC repealed net neutrality two years ago, it completely ignored public safety,” US Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.) said. “Santa Clara County firefighters paid a steep price when Verizon throttled their data speeds as they fought the worst fire in California’s history, and the County was helpless to resolve the issue… Now, when these same first responders of the Santa Clara County Fire Department are requesting a very reasonable extension to file their comments in the FCC’s order because they are on the front lines in responding to the worst pandemic of our lifetimes, Chairman Pai has ignored their pleas. The FCC’s decision is shameful, offensive, and dangerous. The FCC must rethink this decision immediately.”

To us they’re heroes, to the Republicans they’re the enemy. This is not a new development.

There is a catch. This estimate presupposes that Finland’s current regime of contact restrictions and social distancing remains in place.

If restrictions change, projections for the epidemic could change too.

Soooo…they have the “decision” to lift restrictions and send everything to hell, or keep them in place and continue flattening the curve…basically the same “decision” they could have taken every previous day of the outbreak.

It isn’t working, is that not enough?

I’d prefer if the airtime was allocated proportionately to give those staying at home their fair fractional share. So in a 60 second news segment, 59.999 seconds for those staying at home, and one millisecond for the protestors (rounded down to the nearest full frame)

They were doing that. They were giving it away in large quantities to state and local governments (esp. first responders), to charities, and to people who showed up at their locations even if they didn’t buy anything. Basically, to anyone who asked for some.
They also gave it to people who bought their beer (which is very good, BTW).

My bad. RTFA, @duketrout!

Still, it was definitely a stumble to even say that line. If they get fined, it will be because of that mistake.

Because our entire medical establishment collapses when people decide to opt out of getting tummy tucks.

They would argue that that reports of it not working are highly exaggerated. Cases/million put them under many countries. There is even some evidence that the criticisms are being pushed by some political enemies (including a not-completely-batshit story about Chinese government involvment). So far they are well within the limits of their medical system, and the health authorities have a very high approval rating from the citizens.

Yeah, I agree with that. It’s not like Hawaii isn’t lousy with lawyers he could have talked to before making public statements in a situation like this.

Developing story:

In the UK, someone has found evidence that the government was setting up astro-turf twitter accounts claiming to be NHS workers (Some even stealing and using photos of real NHS workers), which were all then used to post propaganda in favour of the discredited and quite frankly homicidal “herd immunity” strategy.

Last time I check their fatalities per million were worse than ours. Having enough beds may mean you don’t have to let people die without medical care, but you still have to watch a lot of people die with medical care. That their deaths are so high with a radically superior medical system should be telling.

I suspect that traditionally anti-social societies (most of the US!) will see a slower spread than societies where people are friendly (Spain, Italy), but I don’t think it’s enough.

Which reminds me, how did Joe Biden’s phone call with Trump go? Did they sort everything out? I heard a lot about it, then nothing after.

Their daily deaths have been dropping rapidly since a peak around 12 days ago. The reality seems to be that Sweden is only slightly less locked down than its neighbors. I think it will take some time before anything definitive can be made of the relative rates, but my sense is that much of the disapproval (even from Norway, where I am) will turn out to have been moral righteousness (and, at least in Norway’s case, a long tradition of being looked down on by the Swedes, up until Norway got rich).

Killing People Because President Deals Has A Hunch And A Dream

And we’ll all just move on because LOL nothing matters.

A malaria drug widely touted by President Donald Trump for treating the new coronavirus showed no benefit in a large analysis of its use in U.S. veterans hospitals. There were more deaths among those given hydroxychloroquine versus standard care, researchers reported.

The nationwide study was not a rigorous experiment. But with 368 patients, it’s the largest look so far of hydroxychloroquine with or without the antibiotic azithromycin for COVID-19, which has killed more than 171,000 people as of Tuesday.

Good thing Pelosi’s House is hard at work.

And here on BB:

Horrible, but awesome shoop.

Funny, countries that fought in WWII see it differently…

(Full disclosure, I love Sweden, pretty upset to see them mangling their pandemic response.)

I recommend one minute of screaming, “Boris lies, NHS dies!”
