Ongoing coronavirus happenings

They do if you have an accent. Not sure which accent though.

No apology needed.
Nice to know Iā€™m not alone in thinking the UK response is;
ā€œRest assured, during this pandemic we will be [doing nothing]!ā€

Companiesā€™ ā€œdoctorā€™s noteā€ policies are dangerously stupid right now. Sending possibly infectious people to waiting rooms puts everyone at risk, especially healthcare workers that are the critical link in dealing with this.

Governments need to set up a screening layer before anyone gets near a waiting room, and to override these policies.

If thereā€™s one type of person I donā€™t mind seeing busted, itā€™s drunk drivers. (OTOH, I am not necessarily fond of the other charge heā€™s facing of refusing to give a breath sample, because that gets abused by ableist shitheads against people with genuine issues).

I went to my local Meijer store about 6:00 AM or so, and it was already hopping. I managed to find the things I needed (sometimes just barely).

There wasnā€™t a single roll of toilet paper or paper towels in the entire place. Fortunately, Iā€™m already well-stocked on TP, since I have about 12 rolls of good stuff plus a mostly-unused case of Scott that my father picked up last year (which I regard as emergency-grade). Paper towels are another matter, but I do have dishtowels, hand towels, and washcloths.

The future is already here, itā€™s just not evenly distributed yet.

Hereā€™s one I had not anticipated. Distilled water for my CPAP machine is not findable here. Hmmm, will have to consider my options.

TP is gone, here, but thanks to a fortunate act of timing, I am good for months. Not hoarding, I just always like to buy lots to have on hand and a club-pack is cheaper than a small pack per roll, but one of those goes a long way for one person. I always stock up on Kleenex in winter (colds) and spring (allergies).

I should probably get some alternative protien like a brick or two of tofu. Most people are probably staying away from that. I also lucked into a sale months ago on 5 year aged cheddar and have some bricks in the freezer. Itā€™s a good flavour punch for rice and beans.

If you were in West Virginia, I would suggest consulting with your local moonshiner, but, failing that, google shows that you cans still buy water distillers. I saw one thatā€™s about $800 for 8 gallons per day, so, not cheap, but probably better use of your time than jury-rigging a still.

I am from WV, but yeah, thereā€™s a distinct lack of 'shine around here. Still looking, we shall see.

I stocked up on distilled water a couple of weeks ago for this very reason. Can you use tap water in a pinch? My humidifier manual says itā€™s not recommended but not forbidden. I do find when I use tap water I need to clean out the reservoir much more frequently because it develops a slimy layer and/or mineral deposits after a few days.

I think you should boil it for a while first.

A few cycles in a electric kettle would be easy.

Thats where i would go. It wont hurt me, but the fact that we have very hard water may be tough on the machine. As problems go, its pretty minimal.

(Disclaimer: Iā€™m a US citizen, so Iā€™m far from knowledgeable on this subject)

I strongly suspect the Tory plan must be this:

  1. Underfund NHS
  2. Do nothing during the covid-19 outbreak
  3. Continue to do nothing as NHS becomes overwhelmed
  4. Claim that privatizing NHS will prevent this from happening again
  5. Profit

Yeah, right now my wife is trying with little success to convince the wife of her 98-year-old father not to have her grandkid come down for a visit from Seattle.

I think the idea is to protect the cashier. We customers are supposed to use the hand sanitizers stores are putting at their entrance.

We had the old mercury thermometers up the posterior.

They were even a gone thing in my day. She might be stupid, but mainly sheā€™s just a liar.

If this catches on, itā€™s going to be a pain for some of my in-laws who donā€™t have credit or debit cards.

Sent this to friends on a cruise in Antarctica, due to return in 10 days. I donā€™t know if they have any chance of coming back early.

Time to bring this article out again, itā€™s from 2007.
Colin Beavan and his family did ok.

I think in ancient times (as in, having no paper or catalogs or newspapers etc.), posh people used

and laundered them in hot water with lye soap.

And the 99% usedā€¦ uhā€¦

Without toilet paper, or really paper of any kind, people had to make do with a handful of hay, grass, straw or moss.
