The “mid-air refueling as sex metaphor” sequence was a genius way of setting the tone for the rest of that film.

I read that he was originally planning on redoing the lettering for the final cut but Kubrick liked the look of the hand-drawn version of the rough draft and asked him to leave it that way, thus paving the way for the countless “indie” films to use handwritten credits sequences years later.

It’s kinda too bad that good title sequences seem to be something of a lost art these days. Occasionally you might see some clever use of opening credits, but rarely anything approaching the graphic genius of Ferro or Bass.

He was also a brilliant animator, director, and editor who, among other things, created the original trailer for Clockwork Orange:

Yup.
Didn’t spot the typo though until weeks after the film was released.

she’s quite the part in the show

wow… never heard of him until yesterday when i watched “sunchaser” (1996, woody harrelson) on netflix and noticed the bad ass 90s colors and fonts on the opening credits. saw his name pop up and took note. had no idea he did all these legendary movies! let it be known his skill was the most noteworthy part of Sunchaser.

here’s a whole gallery of caps from that opening sequence : http://annyas.com/screenshots/updates/sunchaser-1996-michael-cimino/
