My couch approves (but thinks it is too old to pull stunts like that).

In my mind, that’s what I’m doing on the couch as well.

My favorite BoingBoing posts are ones like this that introduce us to someone weird & wonderful.

Mom: It’s a beautiful day outside! Why don’t you go out and enjoy some fresh air instead of sitting on the couch and watching cartoons all day?

Hasan: Hmm…

I love how he has what looks to be a rather professionally engineered setup and yet the camera is duct taped to the top of the TV.

EDIT: Okay, “professionally engineered” probably isn’t the best description considering he doesn’t have a safety harness or auxiliary chute in case something fails. The duct tape actually may be one of the most secure things on this setup.

That… is both hilarious and terrifying at the same time.

I just wonder more about the research that went into this. And the couch: was it hollowed out for weight, or is it an actual couch? As with magic tricks, knowing the mechanism of the trick (for me) enriches the performance. (I guess weight, as such, isnt an issue, since paraglider instructors take up 200lb passengers all the time.)

Plus, choosing the location and date and weather must (should?) have been the crucial decision-- don’t we hear about actual paragliders encountering rogue downdrafts all the time? I’m wavering between whether he’s a slipshod Evel Knievel or a meticulous Phillipe Petit performance artist.

I wonder what professional paraglider/hanggliders think about his feat…

What a way to get high

This is the wonderful diversion I need from the world right now, thanks for posting.

I look back on some of my chairlift rides as a kid on the slopes and wonder how I am alive today. Horsing around with my friend way up in the air with the safety bar up (because teenager).

well, i ride chair lifts without the bar down and that’s fine, but this is a whole other magnitude of nope.

I do not do well with most heights, but this looks like so much fun to me. The view is spectacular

At the moment, seeing groups together without masks is what makes me uncomfortable about this video.

I somehow doubt he was really “relaxing” on that couch.

I’m getting high on my couch, right now!

Edited to ask: where did the shoes go?

He’s smarter than the guy who hooked his lounger to a JATO unit and left an impression on Mohave boulders.

Cool. I used to live near there. Never did that kinda stuff. Dude took off from Babadag mountain and glided down on Belcekiz beach in Oludeniz, Fethiye.

Map Here

Funny.

I tell myself he concealed a harness and safety line out of sight of the camera. Not going to watch it again frame by frame to look for evidence of this, it’s just more fun this way.

PG2 qualified paraglider pilot here.

He could use a tandem glider, so all the crap he is carrying would be the second person. Also, gliders come sized for the pilot with mass ranges so he could use an oversized glider to suit the mass of his setup.

The thing which scares me is that the two sides of the wing are only attached by the couch, and it isn’t supposed to carry a person while supported by its ends. What if it breaks in the middle while in flight? What if the risers come away from the couch?

A paraglider harness is basically a seat but its not that wide, and it usually has a parachute, so you can lose the wing and still survive. His couch has no parachute and nowhere to attach it.

edit: oh and the worst bit is he is landing a heavy piece of furniture in a location which has people walking around. He has limited control authority. It doesn’t look like he could flare it for example. A child could run into his path at the last second and get killed.
